Shady Rest is a local find that gives me the feeling of comfort whenever we visit. We usually go after 4:00 mass on Saturdays & never had to wait. Food is not “fine dining” but it is good, large portions & always served with a smile. The staff is so friendly & welcoming. Drinks are generous- Margaritas with Grand Marnier splash are amazing but one is plenty! The atmosphere inside is warm & cozy- outside it’s a garden party! Beautiful rose vines adorn the walls forming a canopy overhead. It’s the most unique food find I have ever had the pleasure to share.

No contest: THE BEST pizza in Ocean County. The Shady Rest is an Ocean County treasure, & has had the same owners for over 50 years. The staff are friendly and attentive. There is an outdoor dining area as well. It may not have the bay view, but it is my top choice when dining in the area.

Just stopped in for a quick bite to eat, first time I ever visited the place. Looking at the menu I probably should have tried something Italian but I’ve been spaghetti out to the max so I went for the good old standby burger fries combo. It was a very good burger. I need to stop by and try the Italian side of the menu. I don’t get down that part of Route 9 too often but next time I do I will revisit this place.

This place is confusing. Stuck in a 70s time warp where the inside looks like a throwback to an old time wooden house boat, as soft rock and disco are pumped in over the house speakers. They hace a small dining room, an even smaller bar. They do have a few good staples like their pizza is surprisingly good, and their onion soup is top notch. What I don’t like are thr over the top prices. As an example: A hamburger before any extras is $14.99. If you want cheese, that’s and additional $3. Each additional topping like mushrooms, bacon, etc is $3.50. So, unless the beef patty is wagyu, it’s way over priced. They have other selections but most of them are in the $30+ range. This is not a place you go to spend that kind of money. Stick to sitting at the bar, have some apps, and don’t go there on the weekend for dinner, because it’s packed. There are better choices for dinner unless you enjoy sitting in a place that hasn’t had a single decor update since the day it was built. Some people down here like that I guess.

Tried Shady Rest from a recommendation. Delicious! I’ve only ordered their lobster bisque & steaks, but WOW! Steaks are on the level of Morton’s (in Atlantic City) without the $$$. Recommendations would be Steak Alexis (which they don’t have all the time), however, their 14oz Montreal is amazing as well! The wait can be long, but everything seems to be from scratch = worth the wait. Staff is friendly & knowledgeable. Food has been spot on every time. If you have the time, I highly recommend this place. It’s a unique atmosphere, with exceptionally clean fish tanks! I bet it surprises you! I’m hooked & will return!

Food was decent .5 of the 7 employees I saw are just standing around not working or doing anything productive. Only one basically working was the lady behind the bar. This restaurant always gives off a negative vibe to new customers. It was probably a nice place to eat back in the day it opened. I guess the owners dont care no more. but I was so uncomfortable I asked for a to go box and left. Id take my money and business to any other smaller business or food truck before I return here again.
