Great food and value. There’s been several iterations of sushi, sashimi, etc. at this location, but it remains a good place to grab a bit and drink. I won’t mention the one so-so version. Not the restaurant’s fault but downtown parking has become a pain, app wasn’t working and line queued up for the kiosk… luckily we decided instead for takeout, called while waiting to pay parking and the food was ready and partner came back with it before the kiosk! Worked out well in the end.

Lackluster decor, confused entrance and metered street parking all around. Had a rainbow roll, miso soup & hot tea. The rainbow roll was more than 90% rice, mayo, & ground fish filler they call imitation ‘crab’, not good. Miso was too salty and the tea very bland (maybe a teabag?). A lot better choices nearby.

Food was even better than expected, fresh, delicious sushi, and unexpectedly wonderful ramen was an extra surprise. What was really amazing was the customer service from everyone once I arrived. First l, they were eager to get me in and seat me where I wanted. Once settled I was ready to order and they were happy to oblige. food came quickly and was delicious- the sushi chef even thanked me for my patience but I felt it was all prepared very quickly. Everyone from the hostess to the sushi chefs treated me like a friend, and it seemed like this was the norm for all the customers. I had worked a long day and wanted good food, and to be honest, I don’t usually want much conversation but I felt seen and heard in a great way, I wish I had a shin’s sushi in my neighborhood!

Sushi chef was more into chatting with regulars. We travel a lot and live in the area. Just got back in town from Vegas, and service food was outstanding, so maybe our expectations were too high. We wanted to try this place and heard good things. But I think it has new owners. As a local, I would not recommend this place to out of town guest. There are a lot of better sushi places in SLO. Sorry for the bad review, but the place needs improvement.
