This weekend, my family and I went down to visit Popham Beach, one of the largest and prettiest sandy beaches in Maine. We had an excellent lunch of oysters, clams and haddock at Spinney’s Oceanfront Restaurant, which overlooks the beach and mouth of the Kennebec River.

Great place off Popham. This was our first stop in Maine for dinner, and it did not disappoint. Chowder to lobster rolls, it was great! The new owner seems really involved and should be ready for success! Enjoy maine seafood while looking at the historic Fort Popham! We sat 7 at a picnic table on a Thursday evening and had zero issues. I do wish I had saved room for dessert, but the portions were perfect. I had the lobster roll, Step Mother had clam chowder. We had two lobster meals and three fish and chips. It was all fantastic since it was a silent table once the food got there. The mouth if the river gave us the ability to see seals and lobster boats as we enjoyed a typical Maine evening in Popham! Come on down and enjoy our culture and taste a little bit of Maine!

The $28 clam basket was cold and ridiculously small (picture included). When I went to the counter to see if they made a mistake, the manager was called to inform me that “6oz of clams is standard for a clam basket” (FYI it’s 16oz for a full meal). The manager refused to give a refund. After leaving the restaurant the manager followed me out the door and continued to bizarrely rant about the “quality” of his clams. This encounter made me very uncomfortable. I will not be coming back to this establishment.

This is truly a beautiful spot with great food, exceptional service and great prices for being right on the water. So happy with the new addition of a bar and store. You cannot find a better spot to have a wonderful meal whether it’s inside or out of the deck. Also very impressed the amount of non seafood options available as well. You will not be disappointed making a stop here 🙂

I have, thus far, had 3 different meals at Spinney’s and enjoyed them all: Fish-n-Chips (perfectly ‘golden crispy’); Maine Lobster Roll (4 oz. of tasty claw meat); and Lobster Eggs Benedict (Yum!).

We were thrilled that Spinneys reopened and we finally found an opportunity to eat there. The wait was worth it. My wife had fish sandwich and clam chowder. The sandwich was seared and very yummy. I had fish tacos and boardwalk fries. Both excellent. My strawberry rhubarb pie was scrumptious and my wife’s blueberry apple crisp was tasty. Can’t wait to go back.

In reading the reviews, I see a theme in some, especially from people who enjoyed the “old” Spinney’s for years! I will add my voice to this, and also let the owner know that the offerings we miss most are the Popham platter, the baked stuffed shrimp, baked stuffed haddock, and baked stuffed scallops. Please consider adding these favorites back to the menu, as well as other options that were love and enjoyed by many! We love Spinney’s and would hate to look elsewhere for our special vacation dinner, but will have to if things don’t go back to the way they were. Also, we used to love to get breakfast at Spinney’s before traveling back home, but that is no longer an option either.

This place is average at best. If you’re close by and want an overpriced sit down meal, this is the place. The buttered lobster roll was average. The roll was small. The clam chowder was better, but the serving was too small. The brussle sprouts was okay. The positive is that they have an amazing view of Popham beach. And for that, you will over pay for your meal.

We had not been to Spinneys for a few years because we could not get seated in a reasonable wait time. Much better now. New owner has updated the menu and added a bigger sit down bar. Clam Pizza needed more clams. Tuna steak sandwich was excellent.
