Decided to grab breakfast here while running an errand downtown on 816 Day (KC’s area code), as I heard they were doing some specials. Strang Chef Collective is located on the ground floor of Lightwell, a cool, recently-renovated office tower that features lots of art in the common areas. The building is conveniently located across the street from the Metro Center streetcar stop.

The food here is so good! I had the Cuban Arroz bowl from chef Nicole. 1st off, the portion was EXTREMELY generous! I felt like I definitely got my money’s worth. None of the flavors were overpowering and they were all complimentary. The chicken was well seasoned, tender and moist. The diced mango added a nice touch of sweet to the savory rice and beans. I’m looking forward to trying more dishes here.

I ordered a chicken sandwich on gluten free bread. I got the side of fries and my co worker ate them since the fries are not gluten free. The chicken was seasoned and cooked really well and the apple slaw was a good compliment to the chicken. But the bread was soaked and falling apart before I even took a bite. I ended up removing the bread and eating it with a knife and fork. So that was a bummer. It didn’t sit for too long because I arrived to pick up my food early and they gave it to me on time. So the sandwich was very quickly falling apart. I would think it would have a similar issue even if it wasn’t gluten free bread. The fries smelled amazing and my co worker said they were flavored well. They had a really nice garlic taste to it and there was a good amount of food for a lunch portion. Because of the take out container and how everything was arranged a lot of the fries were really soggy. I think the grilled chicken just made the whole box very moist.

The food was amazing, I got the jerk chicken salad with smoked tomato dressing and the flavours were on point. The greens were really fresh and you could tell the proteins were very well prepared. I added shrimp to my salad and it was a perfect complement.

I came here for the second time this week after having a great experience the first time. I live down the street from this location so I walked over with my dog to grab a quick bite for lunch. Prior to entering the building, I looked around for signs saying “no dogs allowed” as I was unsure if I would be allowed inside with my dog, who, of note, is a service animal. There were no signs that I could see however I was promptly approached by a worker (while I was still standing in the entrance not even 2 feet inside the building) who stared at me and shook her head “no” repeatedly. I asked her if dogs were allowed inside to which she replied “no, this is the lightwell building”. I did not argue, but asked if sitting outside was an option. She said yes and I made my way to a table outside in the corner, sat down, and my dog sat down on the ground by my side. From then on I was met with animosity and unfriendliness from the same worker. My dog remained quiet, never once barked, and continued to lay down next to the table. After I placed my order online via the QR code, she asked if I would like something to drink. I told her I ordered water and a sweet tea, and she informed me that drinks were self-service inside. When I told her that I did not want to go inside with my dog because she told me earlier that wasn’t allowed, she suggested I tie my dog to the table while i go inside to get my drinks. I did not feel comfortable doing this and told her that, to which she responded with an eye roll and walked inside. About 5 minutes later she returned with my drinks and practically slammed them on the table without saying a word. I said “thank you so much, I really appreciate it” and she still did not reply and just walked inside. I continued to watch her be very friendly and talkative with the tables surrounding me while she ignored my presence. I finished my food, paid, and left as quickly as I could. Overall, the food was enjoyable but the service experience was disrespectful and rude.

Amazing food! The place is beautiful, the service is great, and the vegan options are actually delicious. My husband loves meat and he loves the meat options too! We love coming back to this restaurant and we’ve only been here in KCMO for 2 weeks.

Working in the same building that Strang is located in is verryyyy dangerous! I treat myself at least once a week to their delicious food! My absolutely favorite is the verde grain salad + grilled chicken. It’s the perfect weekday lunch!
