This was our daughter’s recommendation to visit this place for great sushi “like we had in New York”. Unfortunately this recommendation didn’t meet my expectations. Food was very average, not bad but absolutely nothing special, you’re expecting something different for that price. Simple rolls are $9-10, special rolls $16-20 and higher. My wife had a roll for $16, it was ok but not perfect. I ordered a bento box just to try different pieces, the price was $16 too. For that money you got 3 sashimi (salmon, great), 3 nigiri (ok) and 4 pieces of roll (baaad), all the chief ‘s choice. Also my bento box included like 2 tablespoons of seaweed salad and 3 pieces of pineapple as a “fruit”. Honestly the portions were small and we left hungry. Also we got the fried ice cream for my wife for $6 and that was a very big portion even for both of us. The ice cream looked cool but tasted so-so and we tried it but couldn’t finish.

Stopped in for late lunch and was very happy we did! Ordered noodle bowls. I was disappointed they were out of the hot & spicy udon, so we ended up ordering regular udon noodle bowls, one chicken and one vegetable. They were amazing! Definitely a better broth and flavor than other Japanese places I’ve been. Lots of veggies and everything looked fresh (see pics). Also ordered the mango roll for desert. I was very colorful and tasty. Great way to end the meal.

Great little hole in the wall spot in Shelby! The food was wonderful. The staff was helpful and really nice. They have a whole book full of customer rolls! So it is a hometown local spot with a customer focus! My type of place! If I were local I would probably have my own roll!

I LOVE Sumo. Hands down, the best sushi in Shelby. Go visit, you will LOVE the food! My favorites are the Black Panther Roll, the Double Feature roll, and the spicy noodle soup.

I love this place! It has wonderful food and a great waitstaff, however I was not pleased with the way other people that are dining here treat the waitress. Please Shelby community, treat people with kindness, even if you don’t feel like they did the best job or not! These girls work hard for their tips! Putting a tip in another waitress pocket in front of your server, is rude and very unkind. You should be ashamed of yourself! 10/20/22 @8pm

After waiting for 30 minutes for my teriyaki chicken meal to come to my table and it was barely warm when I got it and there wasn’t one thing on my plate was fit to eat. That along with my drink having way too much carbonated water in it had me shaking my head. I’ve been to this restaurant dozens of times I’ve never experienced anything like it at this location or at the Belmont location I don’t know what’s different but I believe whoever is in charge now these the tighten things up. My waitress was very sweet and did all she could but she was the only one taking care of the whole dining room cleaning up messes and taking care of the people who were already sitting at the tables.

This place used to be my go to for sushi, unfortunately NOT ANYMORE. The last several times I’ve been here its not been a good experience. Food has gone downhill, the wait staff is rude and when SHE got our order wrong wanted to argue that was what I ordered which I did not. Also, was charged more for a kids meal than what’s on the menu and when I pointed this out she argued that as well. It’s also not a good business practice to not care that your customers can hear the wait staff in the kitchen using really foul language from our table. I used to send tons of people to this establishment but NOT ANYMORE.
