Born in the small village of Villa Jimenez, Michoacan, Mexico, founder Manuel Orozco quickly grew a passion for the native food of his country. In the late 1950’s, Manuel and his wife Socorro settled in California with hopes of achieving the American dream and owning their own restaurant that served the native recipes of their village. In 1974, Manuel and Socorro realized that dream and opened the first Super Mex Restaurant in downtown Long Beach. To this day, Super Mex is one of the premier authentic Mexican eateries in the area.
Inspired by their love of traditional Mexican cuisine, Manuel and Socorro created a menu that represents the simplicity and quality of their village’s native cuisine.

Stopped by on a sleepy, rainy Sunday for my first visit. I’m glad I did! To begin, how do you grade a Mexican food restaurant? For me it’s the salsa. Super Mex makes theirs fresh daily and it tastes like it. It was fresh and flavorful. It’s just spicy enough to leave a pleasant warmth in your mouth. I ordered a skinny margarita with Tajin and the 2 item combo. Instead of getting fish or shrimp, I opted for a vegetarian meal. My combo included a crunchy potato taco and a cheese enchilada that was loaded with cheese and covered in red sauce. Everything on my plate was great. Service was fast and friendly. I’ll come back for the menu options and the service. And the salsa! The margarita was so-so, a little watery, but it will not keep me from coming back. Parking is available behind the restaurant, and they validate.

Stopped by on my way home from work to grab some grub. I ordered (mini chimis, beans with extra cheese, and rice) by phone in advance. It was absolutely delicious! The young man that took my order over the phone was super nice and polite. When I arrived, both him and another young lady were super friendly and helped me right away. I asked for extra cheese on my beans, but it seems to have not been added because as the young lady was putting my order in the bag, she noticed that I asked for extra cheese and the person who prepared my food must have missed it. So she literally took my food back out of the bag, went back into the kitchen, and added extra cheese. I was pretty impressed! She could have easily not given a $#!+ and just given me my food as it was prepared. A+! I’d definitely recommend this place and “I’ll be bock” in my Arnold voice! 😉
