Hawaii’s first “design your own sushi” takeout restaurant offers fast delicious sushi, where customers can build their own sushi roll or bowls (from safely behind plexiglass). Located in the Puna Kai Shopping Center in Pahoa, Hawaii.
The first step in the “design your own sushi” process at Sushi Hawaii is to choose your base of nori, soy paper, or a bowl. Then you add white rice, brown rice, or mixed greens and pick the size and style between a handroll, hosomaki (small), uramaki (medium), or futomaki (large). Then comes the proteins, like kampachi or Hamakua mushrooms, fillings, like avocado or ocean salad, toppings, and sauces.There are also tried and true “signature flavors” of rolls and bowls already designed for you to choose from.

Running a business is hard. That should go without saying. However please don’t treat your customers like you are doing them a favor by serving them. This place has an unusual vibe. Dark like a heavy metal concert. Food was average. Prices are reasonable and kudos for not charging more for avocado. Maybe I caught them at a bad time. I will go back here because we all have off days. And we all deserve second chances.

Absolutely loved the food! The service was on point– first time there.. lunch with my son and hus gurl~~had no idea what to order. I had a poke bowl that was just amazing and refreshing!! Sashimi~garlic crab~sweet potato~aoli sauce~ponzu sauce ~tempura flakes to top it off. Delicious!! Definitely will be back!

First experience there was amazing. Almost like a chipotle style ordering for sushi. There are a huge variation of proteins and fillings to customize your own sushi rolls bowls or hand wraps. The staff there was so accommodating and helpful. Probably the best customer service I’ve seen. They totally help you make extremely delicious sushi combinations just in case you don’t know what you want like me lol thx guys! Everything there was super fresh and clean just a matter of you creating your sushi masterpiece! Another cool thing about this place is that they sell these amazing looking sushi cakes I saw a lady walk out with if you have a party or large event. But overall amazing concept, great sushi and the best staff! Will definitely be coming back to Sushi Hawaii Rolls and Bowls!

This place is amazing. I’m on a diet and can’t have rice, which kills my asian soul. It takes skill to make what is essentially a salad taste like anything but disappointment. That being said, I had a keto poke bowl and it is the best lunch I’ve had in a long time. The entire restaurant is insanely clean, and great care is clearly taken in the cleaning and storage of their products. If you’ve ever bought a salad, you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Our family was on vacation visiting Hilo from NY. We were staying in Pahoa for a few days. My daughter and I really wanted some local sushi. We visited Sushi Hawaii Rolls & Bowls and it was great! No one was inside, but as soon as we walked in we were greeted by 2 employees. They were so nice and asked what we would like and made all the food right in front of us. It was amazing. Very clean and delicious.

When this place first opened. It was great, good portions and service. As time went on, service went down, as with portions. But price went up. The last 3 times I went, I always order, a bowl with extra unagi (which you get charged extra for). And all 3 times, I get gipped on the extra unagi. Paying 22 dollars for a bowl with only 4 pieces of unagi total!! Its insane, getting charged for extra, without getting what you paid for. Won’t be going here anymore

We decided to stop here to grab a quick bite to eat on our way to Hilo. We are opening a new spa location in Hilo, called Honolulu Spa & Wellness, and we have to depend on small take out restaurants like this one, because we have no time to cook at home.
