Sushi Yama is a staple within McKay Tower. Always great service. The food always looks and tastes fresh. Fair prices. The two men that run the place always seem to be there for the customers, and they go above and beyond to ensure that you have a good experience. I normally pack a lunch for work, but if I don’t Sushi Yama is where I go for lunch. Quicker, reliable, tasty, and fairly priced. 10/10 recommend!

I would expect much better fresher food from a downtown sushi place than I got here. There was nothing wrong with the seaweed salad. I found the cooked eel overly sweet and mushy, having lost the special consistency you look for in eel. The yellowtail may have been something else, or maybe it was just at the end of its edible life. Anyway, I couldn’t eat it. The salmon was maybe closest to being fresh, but it wasn’t nice fatty salmon, in fact it was rather dry. I also wish I hadn’t ordered the spider roll. It was a pretty sorry roll, mostly filled with breaded crablike stuff.

Excellent experience. Ordered the seaweed salad, miso soup, spider, crispy eel, Michigan, orange and dragon rolls. All the food was delicious. Many dishes had a nice flavor of toasted sesame. The server was very nice and even gave us a complimentary candy with our dinner! Don’t be off-put by the fact that it is tucked away in the basement, it is a great restaurant.

Great sushi at a great price, can’t beat it. Glad I found this place as I’m not from the area. Highly recommend , Would go again. Very nice chef who takes order, prepares and takes your order to you. Gave us free nigiri rolls, And candy . In the basement of the old bank just follow the signs. Super tasty. Kind of hidden gem you always hope to find in an unfamiliar city!

A sushi place in the basement of the McKay Tower, it is unassuming and out of the way from your normal food options. Seating is next to the elevators, but they will bring your food to your table. Prices are great for a downtown restaurant, but don’t expect a romantic dinner out.
