Great Sushi is an art and a science. It is a blend of precise knife skills, a discerning artistic eye, and a dexterous set of hands, as well as immaculate attention to the quality of ingredients. At Tanoshi, Chef Toshio has spent decades perfecting this art, going so far as to create his own soy sauce that is carefully balanced for the rice and fish. Years of experimentation and development have created a menu as bold as it is traditional, balancing the best of the modern art of the sushi craft with the best of classical technique.
Small, low-key Japanese pick offering high-quality omakase meals & a BYO policy. Based on 538 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.7 stars. Price $$$

This is literally my favorite restaurant in the world. I’ve been here four times and each time has been amazing. Each piece is better than the last and every time I have left pleasantly full and fully satisfied. It is also BYOB which is great. They provide ice buckets for whatever you’ve brought and allow you to select from a number of different cups before the meal starts.

Update: we went two more times after the first and the latter two times did not feel satisfactory at all. The fish selections were poor. I guess this place is a hit or miss depending on what they have

When you want a light bite, swing by. There is always room next to the sushi and sake bar (usually fully booked weeks in advance….)

Stunning, great experience. I love essential and tasty food. This is the place. You call and pre-order (and pay upfront -we had the dinner menu).. they buy only the fish you need and is so fresh that for Manhattan is a real exception (unless you go in a 1000$ place). I’ll add pics because no comments can validate as much the place, just look at the color of the fish meet (the odd looking one is yolk and sea urchin, I loved it)

One of the best sushi dinners we have had. The place is an excellent “hole in the wall” style restaurant. It has specific times for serving a few dedicated sittings for specific times in the evening fo Omakase dinners. This is a BYOB, and even if you forget this there’s an adjacent store to buy drinks and come back to the table.

I had one of the best experiences of my life here. Decided to book myself an early birthday solo adventure and it was worth every penny.

No posing, no snobby vibes here. When you sit for omakase at Tanoshi you get the most delicious, simple, humble, fresh and fantastic real omakase experience. I have had other omakase courses ranging from the cheaper end to very high end but I always return to Tanoshi. They are my absolute favorite.

Fresh, delicious, and creative food. Reasonably priced Omakase. Chefs save money on decoration for food quality (a relaxed and self-restrained atmosphere, not pretentious like in Tokyo). This is my second visit (I went here last year). It would be great if menu could offer a 20 sushi per course as an alternative option so we could enjoy a wider variety of fish; sushi dishes with Kanji characters, culturally valued; as well as other soups and traditional cuisines usually available in a high-end omakase course. Set up an emailing list to receive updates.

We used to come 2-3 times a year but it is clearly a different place with new people. Rushed, rude, rudimentary lacking the rustic relaxed authentic Japanese sushi bar experience it once had. This is now a sling and churn fast food sushi hut that will no doubt, for a while, take newcomers looking for the place that garnered the reviews and respect it one had when it was run by others. Not just disappointing, we were disgusted. Never again – and no need with the plethora of options across NYC. What Tanoshi was is now unfortunately over.

After a friend recommended it, we made a reservation for their lunch Omakase on our most recent trip.
