Coming from the West I am very picky on my mexican-esque food. Very nice for a west coast kid to comment on at least.. Because if its not authentic enough we won’t accept it. With that said the flavors here are great for the New England area and Northeast.

The Big Spruce has overpriced, mediocre food. Service is hit or miss. I’d do a hard pass if you’re looking for somewhere to eat in Richmond. There are better options. Also they have a nice poster in the front of the building basically calling you Hitler and a fascist if you don’t agree with their politics. I don’t want to know your politics and have them shoved in my face, I just want to have good food and drinks and be served well. The Big Spruce does none of these. Alienating half of your client base is not going to do you well.

If you are looking for the best place to eat in Burlington, The Big Spruce, is the best place to eat, even though it is in Richmond.

I am a bit conflicted about this place. My wife and I went here, sat outside, had a couple nice drinks and some pretty solid tacos (great service too) but when the bill came we were told there was a 15% service fee. I then also has to tip the great waitress. So, I feel as though I had to pay 35% in extra over what would have otherwise been a great and reasonable priced experience. I’ve seen this in Boston and it is a hard no for me. Price your food appropriately to pay the staff and let me tip for service. Maybe I misunderstood and if so I will take this review down. But it struck me as odd that this pretty cool place with great food was really quiet. Maybe others are put off by this service fee.

As a foodie, I might be willing to shell out $16 for the most amazing street tacos ever, but they really weren’t that good. I’ve had better $3 tacos from a food truck in Austin. The prices are ridiculous for tiny street tacos and the micro-salsa bowls that don’t even fit a chip at $6 a pop are straight up offensive or hilarious depending on how you look at it. I’ve also made better tortilla chips in my own kitchen. Fun atmosphere. Wish the food weren’t such a let down. Would give anything for a decent Tex-Mex or Mexican place in the area.

Tonight was our first dine in experience at The Big Spruce. We had takeout once when they first opened and it was just okay. Decided to give it a second chance. The place really needs someone to oversee the operation. Drinks were very slow to come out. Drinks also were short on the pour with an excessive amount of ice. We had to ask for silverware and napkins after our food arrived as did our neighbors. Our tacos were not distributed in the correct baskets, same for our neighbors. The mahi taco special was terrible. The fish was extremely fishy and cold. The black beans were dried out. The avocado and mushroom tacos were good. The coconut dessert was interesting. Not a good experience.

Ordered takeout online and it did NOT list there was a 15% service charge upon payment. The charge was only shown in the itemized emailed receipt- after they took payment. So we ended up unwillingly tipping 30% on a take out order. Should have listed the service charge during or before checkout. Also charged a $1 disposable container fee. Would not recommend this place.

I was there on Thursday the 29th. It was pretty busy and they were kind of clamoring to accommodate the influx of people that I think was brought on my a sudden break in the weather. There was a younger guy that was kind of directing everything and trying to accommodate each party with a table. He did a great job and while he was clearly and understandably a little overwhelmed, he made the effort to check in with us while we waited for a table and after we got seated. Food and drinks were great and came out timely despite the rush.

Walked in to order a couple tacos for take out. Bartender says “you can use our website, or I’ll be with you in 5 minutes.” Proceeds to tap a beer and sends over guy who was cleaning silverware who is visibly annoyed. Comes over with a credit card reader but no one hands me a menu till I ask for one. Tacos are 3 for $20 but $6 for additional. Pretty expensive but ok. Order 3 tacos and an add on from the specials menu. After a disposable container charge ($1) and mandatory 15% “service charge” $33.59 for 4 tacos. Should be ready in 30 minutes lol. Pretentious attitudes, overpriced tacos, and extra fees. This place is a joke. I’m local and will never recommend or set foot in Big Spruce again.

A chill place with serving delicious Mexican food. The tacos were very good with the scallop taco (a special) being a stand out along with the carne asada. Drinks were also good, especially the Margarita. Great outdoor space.
