Opened in the spring of 2010, “The Goose” is a renewal of a classic American bistro and tavern offering fine dining, contemporary cuisine, warm hospitality and superb service. It has immediately become a popular gathering place in town reminiscent of its predecessor “The Black Goose Grille”.
Its current owners have meticulously restored the restaurant’s original bar and the open fireplace in the tavern which provide a warm and inviting focal point for get-togethers with groups, family and friends.
The two additional dining areas combine classic and contemporary design and accommodate dining groups and events large and small.

The Goose use to be our family’s go-to spot but something has changed. The food is sub par and the usual menu has changed and many favorite staples have been eliminated . The portions are much smaller and are really lacking in flavor. Last month our family of six gave each of our dishes a thumbs down. Today I dined for lunch with a friend and we both left 80% of our meals uneaten. The Cali club wrap was horrible. Bad combination of ingredients. Not sure why my friend didn’t finish her bbq pizza but she said it wasn’t good. Bring back the other menu (it was sooo good!) and the other chef/cooks in the kitchen. As popular as the bar is, the food isn’t working right now. But maybe their money is made at the bar so it doesn’t matter.

Went for Christmas Eve brunch. Our group was seated in a portion that had no heat (or at least felt that way). Service was slow (who wants to wait on a table in a room with no heat) and of course food got cold fast. Couldn’t get out fast enough – a shame as we expected to stay for quite a while. Brrrrrrrrr.

I went with my friend last night. We order very simple food, a Cobb salad and turkey club with fries. It took more than 45 Mins to get our food and that was after we asked several times. The food was over priced and not good. The waiter was rude and walked away while we were talking to him, saying the kitchen is busy and short staffed. Other people came in after us and was served before us. The kitchen was fast for the other customers, just not us. I am not 100% sure but I am black and my friend is white. Everyone else in the restaurant was white or should I say NOT black. We are in 2022. This is unacceptable because my money is green and spends just like everyone else. The color of my skin does not change anything. God created all of us if you have a problem with my color take it up with God.

The Goose has changed ownership several times and once was a real staple of life in Darien. But the present version is a real disappointment. The food isn’t very good (soups and fish dishes were pretty bad…as though straight out of a can). The accommodations are dark and drab. And on a July afternoon with temps in the 90s, a/c was non-existent. The only saving grace was that service was decent and the prices were reasonable. But sadly, we are 30-year Darien residents who won’t be returning any time soon.
