The server was friendly and very accommodating but when my grandma’s food had to be remade it took a very long time (15+ minutes) for fish tacos. The fish and chips tasted good and I liked them, nothing super special though. It was pretty expensive, but you’re mostly paying for the view and fancy decor so it wasn’t unexpected. It looked great and was very fancy. If you don’t mind waiting around for your food longer than you would expect even for a sit down restaurant then it’s pretty good.

Not my go to restaurant. But the architecture and decor was phenomenal! The upstairs where we ate had a stunning view of the pier and golden gate.

Stopped here for a quick lunch and sat outside. The inside upper level seems to be popular as you have a view of the bay but we didn’t realize that til we went to use the bathroom. The place is huge. Staff were friendly and nice, food was mediocre. We got a crab melt sandwich, fish and chips and a whole cold Dungeness crab. Sandwich and fish/chips wasn’t too bad and came quickly. The cold whole Dungeness however smelled old and didn’t taste great, that ammonia smell when seafood is old? For the $35 price tag definitely not worth it. We told the server and they then brought back another crab but this one was roasted and came doused in a butter garlic sauce so all you could taste was the sauce. The one piece I tried still had a strong ammonia smell. And later my hubby had a stomach ache for the next 2 days til it was out of his system. We should have walked a little further down where they had a lot more people and fresh seafood options maybe 25 yds away. So probably would not come back here for the food.

Honestly, food was good but nothing extraordinary. The setting of the restaurant looks nice at a glance but the restrooms were atrocious and sauce was splattered on the walls around. Service was the best part of this restaurant. However, the prices were insane. Expect at least $30-40 per person. I wouldn’t mind paying the price if the food was worth it but it really wasn’t. I could get better tasting food at the food stalls on the pier for a quarter of the price. Overall, it’s not a bad place to sit down at and enjoy some quiet from the pier but if you don’t mind traveling somewhere off the pier, do that instead.

Place was empty and that’s okay. However the tables outside were not cleared around us. We watched people come over to the outdoor menu look at the tables thinking no one was coming to clear them. And leave and that’s a shame as they lost business for sure.

Foods is nice, only things is that the waiting time was overkill due to the waiter mess out our order even thought we are the second table to reach here.

Time is valuable! If you have an exorbitant amount of time to relax and take in the views then this maybe the place for you. If you’re planning on walking the area, shopping and sightseeing, I highly recommend skipping The Grotto! I went on a Saturday at 3:00 p.m. The establishment only had four seated tables when we arrived. It took over 15 minutes before our orders were taken. Waited 45 additional minutes for our food to arrive. IT NEVER CAME! We were able to see at least 10 other tables be seated. Similarly having waiting for their orders to be taken. After watching two tables that were seated 20 minutes after us, be serve their food. My party decided that they had enough and left the establishment. While it has beautiful views and fabulous 1960 atmosphere that make for a great vib my party felt disrespected by this establishment! We will never be visiting The Grotto again and will make sure when friends and relative visits San Francisco to let them know where not to go, The Grotto! Too many fabulous restaurants in the city to bother with them.
