We have dined twice at Pure & Proper on this visit to Black Mountain. For dinner we enjoyed their Cheeseboard, Trout entree and the salad. Then for brunch with our family (grandchildren), everyone was delighted with their dishes. The Lox has a spin with rye bread and whipped goat cheese, delicious Fried Chicken & Waffle, tasty avocado egg salad, and a savory flat iron steak. We sat outside upstairs for dinner nice but noisey. For brunch we sat inside downstairs for a more private and quiet dining venue. Good staff, too.

Perhaps the best Tapas style establishment in which I have ever dined. My usual beefs with this type of place are that the descriptions of the food are more interesting than the actual dishes and that the portion sizes are not proportional to the price. Neither are true here. The food is unique, innovative, and bursting with so many layers of flavor that it’s nearly dizzying. The portions, even for their small plates, are actually generous. For context I’m a 6’2″, 225 lb guy. It’s listed as American cuisine, but I’d call it “eclectic”. Our party had everything from a Nashville hot chicken style dish to a crab gnocchi kind of thing that seemed northern Italian to an Okonomayaki octopus and a potato based dish that was definitely pacific rim. I strongly suggest going and strongly suggest stepping out of your comfort zone and getting something that makes you a little uncomfortable. You won’t be disappointed.

Went for Sunday brunch which was very nice. Inside is a little “cozy“ – meaning a little tight with how the seating is arranged. However, sitting outside was quite nice despite the traffic on the main street. Food was very tasty and prepared well. Ordered bloody Mary’s, but there wasn’t much Mary. Presentation was wonderful but definitely a little low on the vodka. Would absolutely go back and recommend.

Disclaimer: if you go to Pure & Proper and don’t try their Brussels Sprouts small plate, you’ll betray your taste buds.

The service was great, the food was: ready promptly, prepared expertly, presented beautifully and was good. Why only 3 stars? I ordered what I would consider to be “comfort food” and it was just a little too artisanal/deconstructed for me. In summary I’m more of a meat and potatoes diner. Should you visit The Pure & Proper? Yes, I strongly recommend that you visit and review for yourself.

Everything here was phenomenal. Drinks. Bread. Small plates to the coffee and dessert. It was a seriously great experience passing through black mountain. If you’re looking for a nice meal that is well crafted from beginning to end this is your spot.

Probably THE best Sunday brunch that I have ever had. And that’s saying lot because I am a solid brunch-er. Ha! This place has an authentic old world vibe, and everything is decorated with the most simple perfection. The building used to be a gas station a long long time ago, and the little ways they’ve incorporated that into the upgraded, chic style they have now, is so cool. I honestly kinda felt like I stepped into this sweet little spot in another country. My friends and I sipped on iced coffees while we waited. Definitely a specialty coffee spot. We wanted to order one of everything on this menu and just split it all. We had such a hard time deciding what to actually eat because everything sounded amazing. It did not disappoint and absolutely was. The service was fabulous too. We decided to just have an every other week rotating brunch reservation here! You will not regret any meal ordered or time spent here! I promise you’ll talk about it continually. A++ across the board!

Probably one of the best dinners I’ve had in the mountains, the food, service, and atmosphere were fantastic. The employees and the owner were very pleasant. Our favorites were the Crispy Chicken and Steak Dinner.”
