Absolute perfect atmosphere for a hot dog joint. I’ve had better dogs, but I’ve never had them at a better spot. Dogs were perfectly charred and the chili was great. The slaw wasn’t the best I’ve had but it didn’t take anything away from the dog. Service was as sweet as the Tootsie Roll that was handed out at the end. Probably couldn’t bring the boy because… NO KETCHUP ALLOWED!

I went today because I had cash on me because they don’t take credit. I usually don’t have any money on me. That being said, I love this place. It’s one of the last places in Raleigh that remind you of what Raleigh used to be. The owners are not there just to take your money, they treat you like they’ve known you forever. The dogs are good but the feeling you’re at home is more than words can say.

A piece of Raleigh history and delicious to boot. If you’re near downtown Raleigh and want some delicious hot dogs, head to the Roast Grill. Where blue collar and white collar pull up to the same bar and dine shoulder to shoulder on well cooked hotdogs, glass bottle cokes, and never a drop of ketchup. The same grill sizzles away in the corner of this all-cash eatery. Accessibility has not improved with the recent pay-to-park scheme the city of Raleigh has implemented, but, the walk is worth it.

For a number of years I had heard the legend of the Roast Grill…I had seen it on Man vs Food and just had to try it. One day I noticed a sign on what seemed like an old house for hot dogs and realized I had found it. I walked in and was met by the owner cooking dogs on an old cooktop…there was a counter and 2 small two person tables along the narrow walkway. It was perfect…a step back in time in many ways. Not only that but glass soda bottles….something that brought me back to the 80’s and experiences with my dad and I. The dogs are great but the experience sets it apart…bring cash and just enjoy.

I was really hopeful for this place, because I was looking for a hole in the wall hot dog place that reminds me of Bill’s hot dogs back home in little washington. But this place was not it. It tastes very similar to cookouts hot dogs. It also didn’t help that I felt very out of place. And I predicted that the hot dogs were going to break my stomach down mostly because a man came from the back wearing dirty gloves and made my food. Maybe I’ll have a different experience on the weekends. Because they could care less after I told them it was my first time.

George and Kathy are two wonderful people who serve up original recipe chili/slaw Hotdogs. Truly a delicious hot dog. The baklava is also a secret recipe that bursts with incredible rich flavor. Don’t shy away because of the simple appearance of the outside , you can’t beat honest home cooking. Don’t miss this place.

You know it’s gonna be good when you’re standing in line next to a sweet, retired couple that has been consistently eating here for decades. I’m glad I came here right before it opened because the line gets long quick and you want to be able to sit and enjoy the cute diner experience. George and Cathy are absolutely delightful. I ordered the hot dog with everything (mustard, slaw, onions, and chili). The chili is what makes the dog so yummy. According to the retired couple, it took George years to master his grandma’s recipe. I also got the pound cake which was nice and moist. So glad this was my first meal during my weekend trip to Raleigh!

Excellent hot dogs just the way I like ‘em! History, nostalgia, a blast from the past. Enjoyed conversation with the owner and will return next time in the area.
