Maybe avoid coming here on a Monday night? Not sure why our squid wasn’t how it used to be (please see the photo). The pieces are smaller, tougher, less abundant, the color was a darker brown, batter was more soggy instead of the usual light, fluffy and crispy. Felt like they used the leftover ingredients for us. The taste was all right, and our waitress was friendly. I have eaten many times here, starting 20+ years ago and still recommend trying this restaurant, but be aware that quality may not be consistent.

The salt and pepper squid is the same and excellent. The rest of their menu is not very good. Very bland. This was the case before new owners took over who said the cooks are the same as before.

They’re finally open for dine in and they’re still as good as I can remember it! Their pepper salted squid and honey walnut shrimp are the most liked!

This is so legendary that so many people are in love with their peppery and salt squid. I have been eating this for the past 23 years. Staring when I was a student and now a father of 2.

This location is on Sandy Blvd., Portland, Oregon. This has been in business for many years, under the original owners. This was a lunch time when we came in a d ordered from a lunch specials menu. The food arrived and it was very attractive, lots of red food coloring on the batter for anything “sweet n sour”. Chow Mein didn’t come with any noodles in it, except bean sprouts & cabbage in some light colored sauce. The flavors were very plain, the meat that was battered & fried were tough & dry. The red sauce with the sweet n sour was too sour & slightly sweet.

Apparently this place is a neighborhood institution that’s been around long enough that locals (and folks nearby) have been dining here as kids. A colleague told me about family dinners at Thien Hong when growing up, so there’s history and memory here. As a relative newcomer, I became aware of Thien Hong through its erstwhile neighbor, Yen Ha, with whom there had been this rivalry over who had the “best salt & pepper squid in town.” Since then we’ve had the pandemic lockdown and all the chaos that followed, and Yen Ha closed up shop, leaving Thien Hong as the last restaurant standing and the default winner of the squid title, as there can be only one. Anyway, that colleague and I got takeout from Thien Hong a while back, which we enjoyed while lounging in my yard, but fried foods just don’t travel well no matter how short that drive is from kitchen to lawn chair. Truly the way to appreciate and enjoy the salt & pepper squid is in situ, which is what I did a couple of Saturdays ago. My friend from the lawn lunch and I, along with a mutual pal, met up around 2PM, and enjoyed a leisurely (in so far as we were taking our time – the food and subsequent tea and rice refills were on the spot timely) meal. The service was friendly and attentive, and the three of us left very well fed.

Great food! The pepper salted squid was so good! Sweet and sour chicken was breaded perfectly with crunch even when in the sauce. Yum
