Don’t let the sleepy exterior fool you – behind the humdrum facade of this local joint lies some seriously tasty Southern comfort food. My partner and I recently stopped into Uncle Elders for dinner and were blown away by the smoky, mouthwatering flavors.

This was our first shot at finding BBQ since moving and since guests were in town, we had our fingers crossed. We’ve passed here a few times while walking Culpeper and figured we’d go. We started with fried pickles and an order of the hush puppies. Pickles are nice and thin with a crisp batter/shell. The hush puppies had a crunchy outside and tender interior… Didn’t dry out. We split the platter for 2 (or 3) with 3 of us. Brisket, pulled chicken, pulled pork, collard greens, fried potatoes & onions, mac & cheese, and cornbread. I think the brisket and chicken stood out, but all were good. Collards were ok, the potatoes & onion were good, though I wish there were a little more, and the mac & cheese was very cheesy/buttery. Cornbread blocks were good, too. The pulled items were lightly sauced and the brisket had a good bark. All three were on a piece of toast/Texas toast. That was a little tough (I know, I know… Who eats the bread?)

We got a BBQ sandwich & fries + a sampler with hush puppies, fried pickles and onion straws. The dipping sauce was delicious! Everything was so good, freshly made. They also have five or six organic juices. We got blackberry! Would definitely return if we lived nearby. We were en route from Winchester to Richmond, and passed through town to visit Rockwater Park for a bit.

A small restaurant with a big name. Its pretty casual with a country feel. Great food, I had the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on the side. The menu had a good selection of barbecue. EXCELLENT service. They also have lots of stuff for take out.

We traveled from DC to Culpeper and stumbled upon this little gem of a bbq place. This historic landmark was tucked away and we’re glad we gave it a chance. Unfortunately we went after all the brisket was sold out, so make sure you go early for lunch if you want their brisket (it’s clearly very popular!). Their pulled pork and ribs were amazing! The cornbread wasn’t dry and their mac and cheese was delicious. Our wait staff were so sweet and attentive, the whole crew were great at their job. It had a very cozy small town vibe and the price point was a breath of fresh air compared to how much bbq cost in DC.

So far we have visited Uncle Elders Family Restaurant twice. Our first experience was amazing! The service was great and the food was phenomenal! Several people in our group ordered ribs, bbq, and brisket entrees. They all were so delicious….we left full and satisfied. Since then we have been craving their food! Our second visit was for a date night. As always the service was very good! We ordered the fried catfish entree and the chargrilled pork chop entree both with collard greens and one with mashed potatoes. The fried catfish was really good and full of flavor. Unfortunately the chargrilled pork chops were a disappointment. Although the seasoning was really good, one chop was cooked perfectly, however the other was still raw in the middle. After bringing this to our servers attention and telling them which chop was raw, we were told they would “throw it back on the grill.” My assumption was only the raw one would be fixed. Unfortunately they recooked both chops including the small pieces I had cut off which cooked off all the flavor and overcooked them. I was very surprised that they actually recooked food that had already been eaten off of!! I feel the right thing to do would have been to remake the order correctly. The collard greens were also unusually seasoned very heavily. I would not recommend the collards. I am not one that sends food back, but this was very disappointing! This visit left us very disappointed and dissatisfied. I guess from now on we will just have to stick to their smoked meats.

I heard of this place and had passed by it several times. Decided to give it a try. I think ranking the food, I would have to go again. It was between a three and a four. The meat was a bit fatty, hush puppies very good. Would have liked more sauce options

Restaurant is confusing! Sign says to “grab a menu and place order inside” then when we ask for a menu inside the server said they bring them to us and will be right out..

My boyfriend and I travel to Culpeper about once a month and have been here twice. They have not disappointed either time. The food is great and so is the service. The atmosphere feels very much like you’re going to an old family members house, which is so great. Highly recommend the crab soup, baked beans, and their burgers. Prices are great too.

The food is really good. The collard greens are OK, but I’ve had better; not sure the they are worth $3.50 for the side dish. But everything else that we ordered was good. I had the smoked sausage on a sub roll with pulled pork, fried onions, green peppers, and coleslaw. It was all really tasty, but the sub roll wasn’t up to being able to handle it all. It probably should have been served on a plate with some sort of roll on the side. The prices are quite reasonable.
