We enjoyed a very nice evening at Vero. They didn’t have a vegetarian option on the menu, but Chef Howard suggested an Eggplant Parmesan, which turned out to be excellent. The proprietor, Anthony, said they are working on adding some vegetarian-friendly items to their menu. We had a very nice bottle of wine. It was altogether a most pleasant and enjoyable evening. I’m looking forward to going back again soon — maybe for lunch.

My fiancé and I had an extremely pleasant evening at Vero Saturday night. We were just in the mood for a cocktail but ended up having a bite to eat as well. Sitting at a small table near the bar, we noticed right away that the establishment was busy. After waiting a few short minutes for some service, a gentleman, Anthony, I believe, came to check to see that we were getting helped. The drinks were good, but what blew us away was one dish. All we wanted was a snack and we ordered the fried plantain dish. I took one bite, stopped chewing to focus on how amazing the flavor was, and stared at my date. She scoffed at my reaction, but I was being honest. Awesome! More of a dessert, but a wonderful flavor no matter how you cut it. My fiancé then took a bite and came to agree with me. I am not one for hyperbole, but that may be one of the best first bites of anything I’ve ever eaten. Add to that the wonderful experience and you have a real diamond in the downtown Racine area.

We were seated and never given menus for 10 minutes and no water for nearly 20 minutes (and that was only after we had to ask for it) . We asked to order drinks then, which did come quickly, but then the server said he’d be back with his notebook to take our order and he never came back. There were only 4 tables of people and 2 servers and a busser…..it was ridiculous. Since we had so much time we watched and noticed 2 of the other tables also waited for 30 minutes to order. Our waiter had the table next to us and us, that’s it. He took their order after telling us he’d be back to take ours, then disappeared instead of taking our order at the same time. We left after 45 minutes as we still hadn’t even placed our order. The menu looks nice, pricey but nice…. too bad we didn’t get the chance to eat anything. And now we’ve heard from several friends that this is a common occurrence– good food but terrible service.

My girlfriend and I decided to stop in and have dinner on a Tuesday evening after realizing that the Thai place nextdoor was temporarily closed. Upon arriving we were promptly seated in the bottom dining room alongside two other couples having dinner. Although the man who greeted us seemed pleasant and excited about the restaurant, our service wasn’t the best. My water sat unfilled for the majority of our meal and our server seemed tired & preoccupied. The service doesn’t factor into this review, as I believe people should go to a restaurant for the food, not so much the front of the house staff.
