Ok let me start by saying, my wife and I drove from North Vernon Indiana to do a Review on this restaurant. ( a little over an hour drive) I’m not really sure you would call this a restaurant. More of a chicken joint where your chicken is prepared 1 way witch was Absolutely delicious I might add. My complaints are with this chicken joint is. I don’t understand WHY SO DARN EXPENSIVE I mean the chicken was good but it wasn’t Chef Gordon Ramsay, good. And that’s all you really had I would have liked to seen some cornbread and Baked beans on the menu I mean you serve chicken come on Where’s the cornbread and baked beans. Way way WAY to EXPENSIVE!!!!!!!!! But the chicken WAS GOOD very simple side orders Coast law Fried mushrooms, fried macaroni and cheese, Mash potatoes and gravy. Oh and Green Beans I’m going to have to say will not be back. If you like my Reviews like and fallow. I always Encourage you to go out and get your own opinion. Thanks

Iron skillet fried chicken is the best we’ve had in a restaurant. The hand made slaw and gravy were extremely good too. We went there on a Sunday right when they opened. No crowd. Fast service and the food arrived quickly.

Located in a cute small town, this spot is a favorite for both locals and travelers. The servers were very nice and pleased to hear that we had traveled and hour and a half to sample their chicken. The dinner comes with half a chicken and unlimited Cole slaw, mashed potatoes/gravy, and green beans. The dinner is all served family style. We started with the fried mushrooms appetizer. They were good but pretty standard. Next they brought the Cole slaw. It was one of the best Cole slaws I’ve ever had. Now Cole slaw can vary drastically, but theirs was exactly how I like mine. Not too wet, not too dry, and a little sweet instead of vinegar like. Next they brought the chicken, mashed potatoes/gravy, and green beans. The green beans weren’t bad and had bits of ham in them. They weren’t spectacular. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant, but the brown gravy was pretty tasty. Now let me get to the reason this place is famous.

We have been dining here for years, I ride with a group of bikers and this is a must stop once a month for us. Even during COVID we will call in carry out and eat at a picnic table along the canal at Metamora. Today is the first time for us since Wagner Inn won the JB award. We came after 2:30PM to avoid crowds and I counted 7 tables both inside/outside and the bar for a total of 25 customers . There were 3 servers, one behind the bar running the cash registerand two out on the floor. As anyone who works in the restaurantindustry knows, 8 customers (3 tables) is not very busy at all, you will assume the service will be on point. It is non-existent, drinks or sides were never refilled and servers were nowhereto be found. The chicken was still crispy and juicy, but less pepper and much saltier. The side dishes? there is no sense for me to write about what others didn’t write about already. What really got me was for why family chicken dinner for two (It has ONE brest and two tails???) with side dishes (Mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans) and a soda cost $60.11, after 18% tips it was $71. WE LOVE THE CHICKEN, BUT NOT $30 A PERSON, I know fame has killed many restaurants, just like those that were on Food Network. But applying additional hidden charges to your customers is NOT ACCEPTABLE. Would I come back again? Too soon to ask!

The tea was amazing, crisp, fresh, brewed. Mashed “potatoes”..the green beans from a can almost, the coleslaw ugh. Now that chicken, SALT IS NOT a SEASONING, or a rub. The fried pickles..Just not home cooked as advertised. Servers are great. Inside was quite cold.

So I’ve been waiting on this place for a while, my gf lives in Indy and we decided to take a trip to Cincinnati for the day, and on the way back we planned on stopping at Wagner’s, they close at 830 but we got there at like 650, there wasn’t a whole lot of folks there but we did end up waiting till bout 7:20 to get our food but! They had just dropped the chicken so when it came it was fresh so I didn’t mind that.

The restaurant recently won a James Beard Award for their Fried Chicken. Without knowing where this place was nor had I ever heard of it, we decided to do a 2 hr Sunday Road Trip from Louisville KY to Oldenburg Indiana to see for ourselves what we have been missing. By the look of small crowd that had gathered outside, we knew this was going to be special. Once I got inside to get our name on the list, I could tell the servers were not quite prepared to handle the sudden rush of diners/foodies that decided to show up for Sunday Lunch. We waited for about 15 mins and were then seated. We sat next to another couple who drove in from Cincinnati. Once seated we were greeted by our server and got our order in. We opted for the Fried Chicken Family Style. This includes a whole cut farm fresh chicken, seasoned with a simple salt & pepper, dredged in flour then, fried in a cast iron skillet with Pork Fat/Lard. Cole Slaw, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy & Green Beans. This was absolutely the best fried chicken I have had. It was served stacked on a Platter piping hot. The sides only complimented the chicken but it was definitely something to remember. My only complaint would be that they did not serve a Yeast Roll or Biscuit. But did I really need one?

We decided to make a day trip during spring break and check this place out after all the hype over the Michelin star they recently received. The fried chicken was very tasty but a little steep at $17 a person in our opinion. It came with a couple sides (mashed potatoes and coleslaw) which were good also. We were definitely a little apprehensive walking in as the restaurant itself is a bit run down and in need of some TLC. We didn’t expect a lot from a small town eatery but still. All in all it was a fun experience and nice day trip for our family.

The waitresses were nice, but not overly friendly. I felt they assumed we had been there before. They seldom checked back on us, no refills. We ordered the fried chicken family style. The sides were good, the chicken was very good. Came out very hot, you could tell it was made fresh. Fried chicken is the only option here, nothing else. I would go back if I was in the area and in the mood for fried chicken.
