Crystal Wahpepah is an enrolled member of the Kickapoo nation of Oklahoma. She was born and raised in Oakland, California, on Ohlone land, surrounded by a multi-tribal, tight-knit, urban Native community. Crystal’s objectives for Wahpepah’s Kitchen are threefold:
(1) to acknowledge that we live on stolen land; and (2) how that acknowledgement connects to the reclamation of Native food ways (food sovereignty); as well as
(3) to educate communities and organizations on the health benefits of Native food ways using the knowledge passed onto her.

Glad my friend recommended this place, and happy to see one of the first ever Native American restaurants here in Oakland.

Mvto! Loved our visit during a recent work trip to the East Bay area. Treated my colleagues and a few of my staff to lunch and we ordered every item on the menu. The staff paced every dish out well and provided extra context to their ingredients and story while being so friendly. We’ve been a big fan of Crystal and the Wahpepah family – it brings so much joy to see them in action. The food was so delicious that we chose not to eat dinner that night to savor the goodness that had satiated us!

Wow. That buffalo frybread and the chili oil and salsa were so good. I loved the combination of flavors. It was very filling though and didn’t leave me room to try one of the sweets while I was there. I ended up getting some of the chocolate rosehip bars to take. They were delicious.

Wahpepah’s Kitchen is a must go! The food is incredible and the service great. I expected a more formal dining experience, but really enjoyed sitting outside and ended up loving the casual environment combined with delicious food with a gorgeous presentation. It is pricy, but you do get what you pay for! And remember, ingredients such as bison and deer are expensive. I have now been twice and hope to go again the next time I am in Oakland!

This is a family-owned restaurant and the owner/chef’s way of preparing and serving food is deeply rooted in her Native American heritage. All of the employees are friendly and attentive. Beautiful murals are painted inside. There’s indoor and outdoor seating available.

We had a very lovely meal at this restaurant. I took a bite out of my bison taco before I took the picture. I really liked the blue corn tortilla and the bison. My son was with me and he’s vegetarian and there are two entree options for him… he got the pumpkin seed all day. Nice vibe and quick service.

The fact that this restaurant exists and Chef Wahpepah is able to share her culture through food makes this Indigenous heart so happy. We had the bison tostada, Kickapoo chili (mouth watering!), juicy and tender venison skewers and hot, comforting elderberry tea. Everything was lovely, the service included. If you’re in the area, I cannot recommend this place enough!

Delicious all-around. The dishes had flavor combinations that I hadn’t tried before, yet at the same time were homey and comforting. The meatballs with berries were amazing, but my favorite of all was the stew. A wonderful experience and an initiative well worth supporting.

Delicious! We tried the Kickapoo Bison Chili and Cedar Smoked Bison Tostada. Both were very flavorful and hearty. The maple latte was also great (beans are from Cafe Santana).

There’s beauty in simplicity. I love the esthetic choice of displaying jars of seeds on the shelves. Just like books, these seeds tell stories.
