Was very excited to try the newly opened Wheat restaurant. Went with 5 others, starting with some solid appetizers in the Fried Buns with Condensed Milk and Scallion Pancakes. However, that’s where the excitement ceased. Me and two others went with the Braised Beef noodle soup, which we highly anticipated eating. However, we received a pungent metallic spice tasting dish doused in grease. The other dishes at the table seemed fine, and maybe our order is usually better. Nonetheless, I exited the restaurant stomach churning, mouth of fire, and expectations disappointed.

Upon recommendation by Bites of the Bull, we had dinner at Wheat. We are sad Secrets closed but the addition of Wheat to Ninth Street continues the tradition of great Asian cuisine. Walking into the restaurant, we are greeted by a remodeled interior that has a low keyed chic vibe. The restaurant almost has an Asian cafe feel with a cold display case that housed homemade desserts prepared daily so make sure to get there early. We quickly picked out our desserts before even being seated. Once seated, we perused the menu. The menu is bilingual and a quick glance of the restaurant had mostly Asian patrons. Clearly they knew just how good Wheat is. We started with appetizers of fried dough with condensed milk and scallion pancakes. Both offerings were hot and delicious. For the entrees, I settled upon the House Special Pork Belly Noodle Soup and the husband got noodles with scallion oil and a side of minced chicken with mushrooms. The soup was rich and flavorful while the seared pork belly melted in my mouth. The minced chicken with mushrooms was well seasoned and paired expertly with the noodles and scallion oil. With full bellies, we opted to take our desserts home. The cheesecake was decadent and very rich while the strawberry cake was light and delicious. All in all, Wheat exceeded all expectations so much so we decided to return for another meal while eating the first.

Service was pretty good. Food overall was very ok. The thing that bugged me the most was the soup base. It felt like it was water with some sort of powder/ flavoring.

Service was great, and they even you a reusable takeout bag. Ordered beef with bamboo shoots – portion size was decent, beef was tender, bamboo shoots and overall taste profile was just sort of salty. Mango pomelo sago was good though. I wouldn’t mind coming back and trying the drinks and desserts.

The noodles are so good!! I tried a different kind of noodles each time I came here: beef tendon noodle soup, crispy minced beef noodles, and chicken gizzard noodle – all are good!! The chili they used remind me of authentic Sichuan sauce. The best thing is their service: one of our friends had birthday that day, we asked them if they have desserts that we can use for birthday, the server made a cake for us on the spot, they didn’t have to but they went above and beyond to celebrate our friend’s birthday and it tasted great!!

Pretty decent place. Would come again to try other things on the menu. 5 stars because it is pretty solid in the setting of a somewhat limited Chinese food scene in Durham.

I recently visited Wheat and was greeted with immediate, kind, and courteous service. Ricky was our initial server and gave recommendations for dishes on the menu. My partner and I tried the minced beef noodle dish and the pork noodle soup. Both meals were unique and incredibly tasty! During our meal, Ricky had finished his shift, and Thomas came over to further our service. My partner and I never had empty water cups, had amazing service, and especially great meals. We finished off with “Snow ladies” a dessert made from some sort of sweet dough, filled with chopped fruits and cream. I would highly recommend all of the meals we ate, and I would recommend to further explore more of their menu as I can only imagine there are no bad options. I fully intend to go back and have more.

This is my go to place for noodles and rice. Love the braised chicken and Hainanese chicken over rice. Also it might be the best mango sago I had in the triangle area. Good service and would recommend this place for sure!

Found this new restaurant on 9th street today, and it just became my new favorite in the area. I ordered braised beef tendon noodle soup and crispy beef with chillies noodle. I asked for extra chillies, and it had a pretty authentic Szechuan taste. The food was very delicious and authentic. Will definitely go there again!
