The food is pretty good, the beer selection is nice, and i like the atmosphere. Staff isn’t super welcoming and pick up orders aren’t typically ready on time.

We ordered the Whipin platter. It came with with an underwhelming amount of meat that was mostly dry. We also ordered the hummus which was very good. The credit card machine wasn’t working which we weren’t informed of until after we ordered. I tried to order a side of Tikka Masala as it says you can get a side for a dollar on the on the online menu, but was told I could only buy it by the pint for 5 dollars. The beer and wine selection is great for a reasonable price. Hoping it was just an off night.

This Indian restaurant has one of the coolest vibes in Austin. The food is North Indian centric. Don’t go there if you want to experience a really authentic south Indian food. Prefer entrees and appetizers over biryanis. I couldn’t say less about their bar with a wide variety of locally crafted and commercially available beers, wines.

Used to frequent Whip In pretty often about 7-8 years ago w/ some baseball teammates of mine after games. This was my first time back in many years, and I was looking forward to it. Came in after a Friday night baseball game just looking to grab some food to go since I was flying solo. I checked google to make sure they were still open, and to my delight, they were open til 11 pm. Got there at 9:35. Sat at the bar. Told the bartender that I was going to order some food to go, but would grab a beer while I waited. She poured me a beer while I checked the menu, which seemed to be the same as years prior. Saw what I wanted and was ready to order almost immediately, but the bartender had since disappeared. After a couple minutes, she came back, and I tried to get her attention, but she didn’t look in my direction. She then assisted the only other two patrons at the bar, so I waited patiently until I could get her attention. I finally did and told her what food I wanted. As I was ordering, she simply said, “kitchen’s closed” and walked away. Never saw her again. Hungry and confused, I just sat there and finished my beer. The patron sitting at the bar a few seats over from me then ordered some food (and got it) 5 minutes after me. It’s too bad that Whip In, like so many Austin staples, has seemingly plummeted in recent years. I was about to spend over $100 on food and beer to go. I was also going to bring 12-15 of my teammates there to drink and eat after our next game. Guess we’ll have to go somewhere else that wants our money instead. The 1 star is for the Whip In of many years ago.

2020 update: So much has changed and not in a bad way. Outside area is the same but the inside is completely redone. The actual bar is the same but everything else is different. Still a great spot to get a good drink. Kitchen still good as well.

It’s definitely a hidden gem if you like real and simply delicious Indian food. The beer/wine selection is extensive. Definitely recommend if you’re craving Indian cuisine.

The food is phenomenal. We love the pepper chicken, butter masala, and the chicken noodles (it’s all great). I do wish the female bartender was a bit more attentive but other than that, it’s great. I hope they bring back the amazing frito pie soon. .. oh yeah the beer selection is one of the best in Austin
