We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trials and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidify our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.

This spot is incredible! I don’t think I’ve ever left a restaurant feeling like I didn’t spend enough money! When we first sat down the waitress brought us edamame on the house! We ordered the spicy California roll, 2 super duper rolls and a spicy tuna roll and I got a Shirley Temple. Then after we got out food they brought us a slice of cheesecake and I thought it was for another table but it was for us! On the house! And it was SO good. Everything was so good! I eat sushi out a lot but this was hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in years. Everything was very clean and the staff was very attentive and so kind! It’s a shame I live across town or I’d be in all the time!

We’re traveling in the area for a softball tournament and last night was my daughter’s birthday. She chose sushi, so we ended up here completely randomly. Not only was the service impeccable and the food delicious, when they heard that it was her birthday, they brought her out a slice of cheesecake with a trick candle and sang to her. My heart was full as her momma. I could not recommend this place enough for both locals and those wayward travelers alike. Thank you so so much for making her might special!

You MUST TRY the Sashimi appraiser!!! It comes with Chefs selection of fish and let me tell you the White Tuna was the best surprise!!! So tender, subtle sweet ocean flavor; THIS BROUGHT ME BACK TO JAPAN!!! The miso soup was delicious, seaweed salad was fresh and tasty, perfectly prepared. But the Yama roll was a definite great chose, each bite better than the last. Please take my word and get what the chef and waitress recommend. I’m coming back again and again and again!!!

Great service and sushi here at Yama Chen’s Sushi Bar/Lynnhaven Mall location. I am very picky about the quality of my sushi and Yama does not disappoint. I like it that the tuna and salmon rolls have “fresh” fish, and it does not taste like left-over meat/ingredients from the night before. Prices are average here, for excellent quality sushi. I am now officially a regular customer and order here every week. Great customer service from all of the staff.
