YamaChen Sushi continuously seeks ways to offer delicious tasting Japanese cuisine in an inviting and warm atmosphere.
We started as a family business that first opened our door in 2003. Calling ourselves as just Yama at the time, we only had four tables, truly being just a hole in the wall. Through an arduous process of many trial and errors, Andy Chen was able to perfect the now YamaChen menu to that we know today. Each day, for our customers, Andy Chen brainstormed ways to improve the quality of our food, from our in house sauce to our fish providers, creating the signature YamaChen rolls that solidifies our place in the restaurant sphere. He believes that his success is due to his motto: Freshness, Sincerity, and Generosity.
Strip-center Japanese eatery focusing on specialty sushi also offers cooked dishes & lunch specials. Based on 963 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.7 stars. Price $$

Service was very quick and the staff were respectful and super nice. The decor was well done and served for good conversation plus the music was very calming. The food tasted fresh and the rolls were pretty large plus we got complimentary spring rolls and cheesecake which was nice. We enjoyed our stay and definitely recommend.

We recently just moved back to the Hampton Roads and had to visit our all-time favorite sushi spot. YamaChen just keeps getting better and did not disappoint. We ordered the Fire Shrimp, which was amazing as an appetizer. I had the Candy Cane and Christmas Tree rolls (pictured). My husband had the Dream and Twin Tower rolls. We were both pleased with the food, service, and atmosphere. They also gave us complementary egg rolls with our food and delicious cheesecake for a sweet finish. I highly recommend coming here if you haven’t already!

It’s our first time here, but it’s an amazing experience. The atmosphere really sets the mood- a nice one, precisely. The menu offers a variety of foods, and the rolls here are spectacular! When we got our order we didn’t expect it to be served in a boat lol. The service here is amazing as well!!

Nice atmosphere overall with cool decorating. We had high expectations because the food presentation was good but the sushi did not taste fresh and the sauce was not good. First time in a while that I did not eat everything. Our service was probably an anomaly but the waitress was rude, didn’t get the order right, and didn’t deliver drinks until very late. She was not busy so she didn’t really have an obvious excuse.

Got a takeout order for my daughter who loves sushi! Staff was friendly, knowledgeable and helpful! The restaurant was clean and nice. The prices are fair and she says the food was amazing. I took a bite myself, and while I’m not a sushi eater, I might have to start! I came at the end of lunch rush, and the service was still very fast. A hidden jem! Stop reading this and get some delicious food!

Sushi with an ambiance! So calm and peaceful, I felt like saying Namaste. The staff is so polite and professional. Came here for lunch, next time I’ll try that famous boat. The cheesecake bites are so delicious! Super clean establishment serving delicious food.

When we got in, you could tell immediately that the experience was going to be good. The restaurant isn’t too large, but there are many seats plus (amazing) decorations without making it look crowded. We were almost immediately seated and given menues. There’s something for everyone, from sushi to chicken. The prices are reasonable to high, but it was definitely worth it. The wait was not too long considering how much we got (it wasn’t a busy day so it may be different on a busy one). Even by looking at the food, you could tell how much effort was put into the dishes. The food was perfectly seasoned. The customer service was one of the best parts. Our waitress was very nice, checking in on us once in a while, and we even had a nice conversation with her. The other staff (even though we didn’t get to talk to them much) gave us friendly smiles and waves when we saw them. The experience and food was nothing less than perfect, and I would give them more than five stars if I could.

I’m definitely not a sushi expert, I couldn’t tell you if it was technically correct or not, but it was certainly the most delicious sushi I’ve ever had. Staff was very helpful and kind, and even allowed me to play a song on their beautiful baby grand piano! Atmosphere is pretty and relaxing, and the comfortable booths really come in handy when you’re nursing a stomachache from their generous portions! Prices seem high until you actually get your plate and realize that you definitely get what you paid for, and more. I highly recommend the Hawaii roll, it’s a sort of a marriage of Shrimp Tempura and a California roll. The shrimp tempura had a nice, flaky fried coating instead of being greasy like some other shrimp tempura I have had in the past. Service was very quick for us, but we were there during a lull on a weekday so I can’t speak as to what it’s like on a busy evening. Overall, it was such a great experience and I wish I didn’t live 10hrs away!
