Started by high school friends and Virginia natives Roby Williams and Elizabeth Sexton, SMOHK quickly rose to local prominence, being voted as one of Richmond’s top 3 Best Local Barbecue Restaurants in the 2018 Style Weekly Readers’ Choice poll.
In 2019 we were humbled to be voted the winner of USA Today’s 2019 Readers’ Choice award for Best Brunswick Stew in Virginia!

Laid back and no fuss BBQ joint. Great meats and sandwiches. The ribs were just falling apart. The mac and cheese could have been a little bit better and the sauces could go up a notch, but overall solidly good BBQ.

“Obscure” indeed ❤️ BEST BBQ…. Everything was tender… We had burnt ends, ribs and briskets. Drove from Hampton and will come back again. He’s tucked away… A “hidden” gem. Great conversation and tour by the owner.

Roby and crew are great!! Gotta love owner presence in a restaurant! ALL MY XXXs brisket sandwich was amazing, loved the burnt ends(more like charred nuggets of tender carmelized goodness!!), pulled pork was delicious, and ribs sampler was great (they are more of a dry rub rib, but fall off the bone tender)…can’t wait to try the chicken next time!! Sauces representing different regions and types of bbq. Was really enjoyable to taste-test them all!!

Delicious! I had the brisket with mac and cheese and collards. The brisket was perfectly tender and moist. The mac and cheese was tasty and light. The collards were tender as well. The customer service was fantastic. I would definitely recommend and will be back!

Had lunch there while walking around Scott’s Addition. Had the brisket. It was very well cooked. Highly recommended. Collards were excellent. Not a pretentious BBQ restaurant, just plain good food.

Wow. I sent my husband to a get food to what looked like the hottest bbq joint in Richmond. He called me and said they are closed ran out of food “I’ll find something else.” I expected sloppy seconds . Boy was I surprised. Great food … Best ribs ever. Not greasy, not too goopy with sauce, not overcooked …. just right. Pulled turkey great. Ribeye. No grease on any of it …not oversmoked…. yoummmmmy!

With such an incognito entrance, I did not initially expect Smohk to have such delicious food. But I was fortunately mistaken! Their pulled pork was awesome, but what I really enjoyed was the brisket sandwich! Served alongside chips and my choice of bbq sauce, it made me return right back to order more the next day.
