14 years ago, I had the best cheesesteak sandwich at a food truck outside of Lowes. I’ve been searching for a similar experience since – today I found it at Stanleys. Our server was great and everyone was friendly. A few growing pains after opening, but great food and a fun atmosphere. I’d highly recommend it.

Going to give it another go to check out the Philly, but so far it’s been hit and miss. The roast pork and broccoli rabe was good, but the roasted eggplant was relatively plain and the chicken cutlet was a bit of a disappointment. I absolutely loved the first few bites of the cutlet with the dill heavy slaw it had on it, but the sandwich was heavily loaded with hot mustard where all you could taste after those first bites was basically horseradish. Definitely will be getting it without that next time. There was also some grit still present in the slaw (I’m assuming) as it felt like a large piece of sand was bitten into with the cutlet sandwich that I had to pick out of my teeth. Unfortunate, but it happens. Largely, my dinner partners and I were left comparing it to other restaurants in the area. There is a better roast pork and broccoli rabe at Fat Kids Sandwiches and a better roasted eggplant/vegetable sandwich at Stella’s Grocery.

This restaurant reminds me of a hole in the wall spot in Jersey in the 90s. No frills. Decor is like grandma’s basement. It works though. Pretty comfy. Ordered the steak and cheese. Pretty solid sandwich. Very flavorful. A little spicy, but the good kind. Definitely check them out. Had to ask for mayo and ketchup cuz I’m a condiment gal.

We had at Stanley’s last week. Everything was so good! How is that wedge salad so much better than everywhere else? It really is. And the cheesesteak was one of the best I’ve had. And huge. It was big enough to split. The trout dip was delicious with just the right amount of dill. Service was thoughtful and friendly. Just the whole evening was amazing. The place has a great vibe and is laidback but still carefully curated. Can’t wait to go back.

Went hoping for what I’ve heard is the best Philly cheese steak in town. Was more then displeased with what I ordered. The bread was beyond dry and harsh to bite/swallow. Along with that their special cheese steak was beyond over powered by hot peppers. I usually enjoy hot and sweet peppers on my cheese steaks but this was just over done. Couldn’t taste the meat or cheese whatso ever. Not to mention it was $16 for the sub which is maybe a foot long and it only comes with a handful of chips probably out of a big bag of Layz Ruffles in the back. It’s $4 to add a side or $5 more. So we are looking at $20-21 dollars for just a medium sized sub and a mediocre side. Completely over priced. I also got a soda and that wasn’t any cheaper and came in a small glass bottle so you know what that means.. no refills. Had higher hopes. Maybe they’ll fix their menu or add something that you can taste.

Really amazing food, the roll really ties together the sandwich and just speaks to the attention to detail of the food here. The vibes are perfect, reminding me of hanging out with my cool aunt, throwing back shots, and playing pool in her basement. Will be coming back again to shoot pool and try that meatball sub! (Did I mention the wine selection is perfection?)

On a whim, I decided Constant Companion and I should go here for an early supper. I wish I hadn’t. They were supposed to open at 4 o’clock but they didn’t open until some time after that. They didn’t have the eggplant sandwich listed on their website menu. Constant Companion is a vegetarian and was looking forward to it. He doesn’t like mushrooms so the only other options were a salad, without the bacon and egg, or the tomato pie. But, wouldn’t you know it? The tomato pie was not ready. Hmmmm. We decided I would order a sandwich and then we would go elsewhere for his meal. I ordered the Ted Danson. It was a pretty ordinary sandwich. The bread was good but otherwise, run-of-the-mill. I could have gotten something similar but tastier and less expensive at Coppola’s. I don’t what make it Philadelphiaesque except perhaps the presentation — which was odd: Despite the fact I was clearly eating at the table, the sandwich arrived wrapped tightly in foil with some kind of tape holding the foil together. The sandwich was too big for the plate. The waitress apparently thought her overweight, overly tattooed body was attractive enough to dress like a Hooter’s waitress, but, ah well, that’s the world we live in. It’s more important to make a statement than to pay any attention to aesthetics. The staff seemed much more interested in socializing than doing work. I’ve worked in restaurants before and I know there is always work to do. Also, there’s this thing called scheduling: You don’t need to have all the staff come in at the same time. I doubt this place will be in business for long; the owner clearly has no clue. (Why are mushrooms the only thing restaurant owners can think to cook for vegetarians? It’s not a creative choice at all.)

For those complaining about the price of the food, I’m not sure they actually tried this place, because the sandwiches are enormous. The cheesesteak was delicious. The beer prices (most are $9) are pretty high, though. Regardless, glad to have Stanley’s in the neighborhood!

Got the cheesesteak and the pork and rabe…was really looking forward to the pork and rabe but it was dry and lacked flavor. The cheesesteak was delicious. However, felt like the prices were high for a six inch and bag of chips. Service was pretty good…grabbed a fishtown beer while I waited and finished it just in time for my order to appear.
