I heard this was a newer sushi spot in Philly that also served steak, I figured I love both things let’s give it a try. This place is very easy to miss, there is a small sign outside with the name of the restaurant & wasn’t really eye catching. When you enter where to go is a bit confusing on whether you go up or down. We eventually figured out that you go downstairs in an intimate low light setting. I was not greeted by the hosts at all they were all laughing & giggling among each other. The waiter actually greeted me & sat me down. Alex was such a pleasure as our waiter! He explained all the seasonal items, top favorites & I love! When it’s your first visit it can be overwhelming with a knowledgeable staff it goes a long way & kindness too. The lychee drink 10/10 not too sweet or too strong. The special crab roll 10/10, lobster roll 10/10. We also had the wagyu steak not pictured here but also 10/10 and this will be the cheapest price I’ve seen for such a quality steak, I loved the visual presentation with the blow torching the steak as well. All the sushi was super fresh & I would definitely recommend this place! I wish they had more marketing or socials to get their name out there.

So good every time. Our favorite restaurant in the city. Sit at the sushi bar if you can. Chef Yonten is incredible to watch. Highly recommend a chef’s choice sashimi. Also the Walnut St roll is my favorite sushi roll I’ve ever had. I get it every time. The front of house staff are all amazing and so nice. If you want a refreshing Japanese cocktail, ask Pia to make you one of her specialties. Amazing!

Not a single miss. Everything was amazing. The flavor was outstanding, we got the Chef Omakase, pork chops, yuzu yellowtail tataki and fried wings (unfortunately I did not get a picture they were eaten too fast). As well as about half the drink menu. The chef did an outstanding job with flavor combinations and texture, it all just melt in your mouth. Our waiter Alex was great and gave us recommendations and exact descriptions on each course. He was very friendly and it’s wonderful when the staff is knowledgeable about the food, it makes it very reassuring that the food is important to the staff as well. 10/10 have not enjoyed a meal this much in a long time. This made me want to actually leave a review so more people can enjoy it as well. (Not all course made it, they were devoured as soon as they hit the table.) One of which was the pork buns, again, outstanding flavor. Absolutely amazing.

Simply put this is the best sushi in Philly. It is better than Royal as many past chefs now work here. The sushi chef is next level and the staff extremely attentive.

Amazing food, service, and ambiance. Their sushi was soo flavorful and fresh, and cocktails were great as well. Fun + friendly staff! I only tried sushi this day, but will definitely come back to try their steak (and more sushi). Finished off our dinner with black sesame and matcha mochi ice cream which were both excellent

HIDDEN GEM! We were randomly walking down the street on a Friday afternoon and we found Umami. There were so many choices on the menu but we decided to go for the Omakase. It turned out exceptionally good!

came a few days ago. nice aesthetic, food not so much. came expecting a high end meal. only one guy was serving all the table. didn’t want to hassle the man by returning the food but steak was not cooked well, wasn’t even hot. fish quality was good but nothing special that makes this place better than others. not worth the price. service decent

We came here to celebrate my husband’s birthday. The food was outstanding. Alex, our server, was knowledgeable, funny, and generous with his time and recommendations. Umami has a speakeasy feel, as it’s downstairs and unassuming from the outside. We had several appetizers and lots of rolls and sashimi. Every single thing was fresh and delicious. Nothing was ordinary. Everything was extraordinary. I wish I could rate it higher than 5 stars. Run, don’t walk, to Umami.
