My wife and I split the Captain’s platter. Two types of fish, calamari, shrimp, and scallops. Oh and fries! Maybe the best fried fish basket I ever had. The cocktail sauce had a great horseradish heat! The tarter sauce was fab. Only down side was that you can’t get beers if you sit on the sidewalk. So go inside for a great selection of beers on tap.

Our family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! While shopping downtown Hilo, we came upon Mohala’s and our grandsons looked at the menu and decided we had to eat there. Their menu is pretty much just seafood so for a non-seafood eater like myself, the only thing on the menu is a grilled cheese! It was a good grilled cheese made panini style. But for the main review. The entrees they ordered were the Captains Platter with Mahi and the Fish and Chips with Ono! They all said the meals were Delicious!! Our grandsons begged to go back again but we did not have the time to get back to that area! There was only one server but she did a great job even as the restaurant filled up! If you love seafood, I would definitely say this is a must do while at Hilo!!

I Ordered biscuits and gravy, and my friend ordered a vegetable quiche… they brought out a meat quiche, and she took it back to replace it… took forever… Then brought out my biscuits and gravy, and while the biscuits were warm and good, the gravy was cold as could be. The waitress took it back, and I waited a long while. By the time she got back, the biscuits were cold. She brought me back the bowl of gravy, and it was warm. Never offered me new biscuits, just said sorry. Drinks never got refills the whole time we were here (all this took about an hour of our time). Restaurant was not that busy.

The place looks small but feels really big inside. They have a lot of neat decorations inside. The menu is very limited basically to fried thing which is not very healthy. Everything that I had was freshly made based on the taste and texture. The only thing that was a little of was the consistency of whether it was under or over cooked. Kind of hard to tell if it’s cooked properly when it’s fried. The sauces were amazing and I’m sure they make them. We tried 2 different fish, scallops, and calamari. I loved the scallops and the Ono fish. I’m not used to all the grease that comes with frying and give me acid reflux. The sweet potato fries were very addictive. I’m not sure if I would eat here very often but I wanted to give them a try.

Place was recommended… it was meh. I’ve gotten way better fried fish in Arizona. Which shouldn’t be? Star was friendly… the crab cake salad was better than the fish. I would rather get poke across the street from this place.

The service sucked; we sat down at our table, looked over the menu and proceeded to watch another family commence to sit down at the table next to us. The “server” came out into the dining area and took the other family’s order. I kindve said something out loud to my family that we should’ve been first; and she heard me. She did however bring our food out before the other family’s. However, I truly believe that if she hadn’t heard me, we would’ve been served last. The food was okay, the fish and chips came out in a decent portion. Everything else in our group was really small. We had 2 grilled cheese orders and both came out cold and both solidified cheese.
