I recently dined at Nichinan, the Japanese restaurant located in the Hotel Thaxter. The space itself was gorgeously designed, creating a sophisticated and inviting atmosphere. As a sushi lover, I was thrilled to find that their offerings were exceptionally fresh and delicious. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and went above and beyond. I will start by saying the ambiance of the restaurant is stunning. But the food and service were both bland. The sushi was flavorless and not creative. Spent over $140 for two people. Do yourself a favor and go to surf instead.

Such a cool atmosphere, awesome service from out waitress (I wish I could remember her name!) and delicious food. Makes a great date night spot. Definitely finer dining which makes it a great place for special occasions. I totally appreciate a nicely lit restaurant and gave this place a 10/10 for that definitely. Also, I have to add the bathroom was beautiful!

Very beautifully designed interior, attentive staff, quality ingredients. This is a place for a specific taste – small, creative plates, a handful of sushi options, and upscale so prepare to spend. Delicious cocktails. The rolls we ordered were tasty and fresh but difficult to manage – they didn’t hold together and were just slightly more than a bite making it awkward to eat politely. If you’re looking for unique, well-crafted Japanese food and small sushi variety, you’ll love it. If you’re craving a more typical maki/roll menu, this may not fulfill you.

Amazing new jewel in town. Our first izakaya. Very creative unique dishes, great cocktails, excellent deserts. We loved everything: caviar appetizer, pomegranate katsu, hamachi roll, squash and caraage. Great ambiance too. Excellent for a couple or a small group for a cozy intimate gathering. The ambiance is chic yet cozy. The bar looks amazing. The service is spot on. And most importantly the food is great. The uni nigiri is out of this world, and the pork belly buns just melt in your mouth. Also loved the wagyu gyoza. Definitely a must-visit for anyone who lives in or is visiting Portsmouth.
