I always look for locally owned (non chain) restaurants when I get into new town. I found Silver Cafe driving through town after camping and hiking in Gila Forest. I had breakfast and it was super — great food, service AND the flour tortillas were nice and thick, hot and slightly charred, just like mom used to make.

Nancy’s is one of my favorite restaurants of all time, incredible home style New Mexican food: green and red chili, outstanding chile rellenos, fresh sopapillas for dessert or with coffee. Sadly they have been closed due to lack of staffing the last two times I’ve passed through town at lunchtime (a month apart).

We traveled over 1,500 miles stopping at various eateries. Nancy’s was at the top of list of best places to eat. It’s the best mexican food I’ve had since my grandmother’s home cooking. In addition, their, made from scratch, cherry pie was exactly the perfect topper to a delicious dinner.
