Worst dining experience ever.

This place has gone downhill and my guess is that it has new owners. This is hardly Indian cuisine – lacking in flavor and quality. The butter chicken was completely dried out and the vegetable korma was from a frozen bag of vegetables … not fresh at all. The regular nann was more like a greasy pita with a strange fake garlic salt spread smeared across the top. A real disappointment. The service was terrible and the owner’s toddler or grandchild was running around the buffet area with the salt shaker from a table in his mouth! We didn’t finish our meal and will never be back.

This used to be one of the better Indian restaurant in Salem. Their butter chicken and vegetable curry were better than the India palace downtown. Their tandoori chickens were spice with fresh herbs, not just marinade which make them red, their naan bread was made fresh from scratch. For some reason, either new owner or different cook, their food in the last 3 or 4 times we went there weren’t as good as it used to. Chickens were dry and even when swimming in the curry or butter chicken sauce, they still taste like inadequately spiced.

Visited for the first time in a long time tonight. They are under new management. Terrible food, from a jar or from frozen. ‘Medium spicy’ butter chicken was sweet, super salty, not even slightly spicy, with chicken that was definitely not tandoori or even cooked in its sauce. Dirty, sticky menus. Really dirty bathrooms. No other customers. Sad to see this place gone so downhill. Couldn’t eat the food and just had to get out of there.

We have been going to Star of India since they opened the doors. Tonight we went for the first time in quite awhile and was very disappointed. The service was horrible. The waitress left to tend to her baby and then we didn’t see her for quite some time. Our meal was tasteless, the Naan was hard, the chicken had not been simmered in the sauce (which was no more than tomato sauce) but thrown in later and was tough (I also found bones) and the rice was dry and had no saffron at all. We have had authentic Indian food and this was not it. Save your money and go somewhere else.

Great food and friendly waitstaff. This is a small restaurant and there is often only one waiter however, we have always had good service. If you want atmosphere or a fancy building, go to Portland or Seattle. This is Salem and there aren’t many restaurants with a great atmosphere. The restaurant is clean and well kept but plain and the buffet has had fresh, delicious food each of the four times I’ve gone. If you prefer a more highfalutin restaurant than described then I would not suggest Star of India. If you aren’t worried about the ambiance of the restaurant and can live with a casual environment then I would highly recommend it.

We came here with 8 minutes until the buffet closed. We went for the buffet anyway, knowing that it was the food leftover from the day and that we probably would not get anything fresh. I was wrong. The food was delicious and anything that wasn’t fresh, they made fresh for us (naan, rice, tandoori chicken). I just went to the India palace buffet two days ago and this is significantly better, even though I got “end of the day” food here. Great service too! We were the only ones here, which I do not understand. We will be back!

Yummy, simple, family run. I have been to Indian restaurants all over the west coast and in England, so a bit of a food snob LOL….The garlic naan was the best I’ve had since moving to Oregon!! (By the way, it’s supposed to be a little crusty on the edges and soft/chewy in the middle.) Started off with the vegetable samosas, very flavorful but a tad salty. Chutney was a little heavy on the vinager. Had the chicken vindaloo, little lite on the spices, white meat chicken which is healthier than the dark meats but was just a bit dry. Yes they did have their children there and I was the only person, but they were very sweet and had great service. Checked on me multiple times. I will definitely be back. Seeing as we live in Salem and this isn’t a foody kind of town, I was happy with my meal and got my Indian food fix!

Wonderful experience and introduction of Indian food to the family. We ordered the chef and veggie thali. Everyone got to try many different things. They even accommodated the family for a special order of tandoori chicken. Thank you and see you again.

Spur of the moment drop in for their lunch buffet. Value was excellent for the $8.99 lunch buffet, which included a beverage. Most the food I sampled was very, very good. The Butter Chicken, Tandoori Chicken and Rice & Milk Pudding were excellent.
