Billy’s Burgers brings all-American nostalgia back to
Jackson with its reopening June 28 at The Virginian Lodge. Conveniently located on Broadway,
Billy’s counter service menu features the famous half-pound burgers and classic sandwiches,
original waffle fries, soft serve ice cream, and a few surprises. The original town square Billy’s
(inside the former Cadillac Grille) was modeled after a 1950s-style diner. The modern Billy’s
retains that classic diner feel with checkerboard floor, original neon sign, a small dine-in counter,
and cozy booths in the adjacent dining room. Eat inside in the family dining room, settle in with
your order at the lively Virginian Saloon or take the fun outside to the seasonal front patio or
inviting courtyard.

Kudos to the Virginian and all the work they’ve done to revamp the place and bring back local favorites. The place looks great! But wow. Just had an overcooked, sad and dry burger. And the waffle fries? They were really dry and crispy, almost like they’re air-fried and trying to be healthy? Not sure. Hopefully things improve and my experience was a one-off.

This is the first time we tried this place in the neighborhood. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to get a photo of our food because my phone was dead. We ordered two Billy’s burgers. His came out perfect like a normal burger. Mine was completely raw in the center (looked like uncooked ground beef you’d buy at the grocery store. I went up and showed them it was raw. I am a professional line cook and I know when a burger is cooked and when it’s inedible. The chick who I showed it to immediately gave me sass and said all their burgers come medium and that I should have ordered it well done. (Now given my background, I know when a burger is medium). And that one wasn’t even rare! It was completely RAW. Not only that but I got sass from someone who’s clearly an idiot about food and the restaurant biz.

I was not in town when the original was here so I can’t speak to that one. Let me tell you, this burger is no joke. Took me a few times to perfect my order but I will going at least twice a week. Waiting on that punch card, Eric!

I grew up with the original Billy’s adjacent to the Cadillac Grill. This spot does not deserve to use the name. Sorry, but this burger was trash and had zero resemblance to the original. The patty was seasoned like kebab meat for some reason. The lettuce was old and shredded, unlike the original thick crispy lettuce. Just a few strands of thin onion whereas the original had a fresh, crisp full cut of onion. No mayo like the original. No mayo even available at all. No true American cheese. It just isn’t a Billy Burger and I am truly disappointed. All the being said, the staff was very friendly and the outdoor seating was nice, though they hadn’t wiped it down after the rain. Please respond to me. I’d love to come out and show you how this burger should be prepared. Or go to Bapp and have their burger, because theirs is almost a replica. At the very least change the name because you are not serving Billy’s Giant Hamburgers.

Tonight I called Billy’s Burgers to place a To go order. The number listed on google apparently routes to the Virg front desk. The gentleman said Billy’s doesn’t have a phone. So I went online to place an order, no online ordering, ok, so we went in to place a to go order. We asked to create animal style waffle fries, since they had all those toppings available as burger add ons. The cashier said no problem, and repeated our order to us. When we got home, they had placed all those toppings on the burgers instead. A slight mess up on our order, oh well. The burgers were delicious, but there seems to be a big issue with service/consistency. My roommate had also gone a few days ago, dine-in, and the cashier gave her the wrong receipt. They circled around many times with her order, that didn’t match the number on her receipt. She explained that what they were carrying is what she ordered. Management later came outside and made a big deal about it and insisted she come inside as she was eating (everyone else had long finished their food) to pay for rodeo fries which she never ordered. Her bank statement shows that she correctly paid for her chicken sandwich. They had a massively difficult time understanding their own error, and when it was all done, no apology or anything. The food is good, the service is poor, and if they can’t even get to go orders correct, make me hesitate to revisit.
