This is the little eatery at the Detroit Zoo not to be confused with the actual restaurant in Downtown Detroit. Honestly, I thought that because it was at the zoo it was going to be outrageously expensive but surprisingly it wasn’t. it did still cost more (about $3.50 for a Coney) but that’s only about $1.15 more than at the actual restaurant itself. I would also say that the food was about the same quality so if you’re a fan of the restaurant, next time you’re at the zoo you may want to stop and try this. It is definitely worth it.

American Coney Island has a captive audience of zoo visitors and takes advantage of that by charging $4 for a small cup of fountain soda. Everything is expensive, and everything only tastes “okay.” The casing on the hot dogs is tough, and the chili is bland but passable. Eat before you go to the zoo and try to forget about food until you leave.

It’s in a zoo, so you can expect overpriced food, but what I didn’t expect, was how flavorless and cold it was. The chili was so bland that my daughter threw hers away. I had a hot dog. I mean, it’s a hot dog. The fries and the cheese sauce were cold and utterly flavorless. We also had to stand around waiting for our food before I finally said something because they didnt realize they missed our entire order. We were literally the only people standing there so I’m unclear why not one of the four employees caught on sooner. I blame myself for even thinking about coming to a location in a zoo.

Appetizers were great, we tried the hummus and spicy shrimp creole. Scallops and the ribeye dinners were good. My son said the mushroom and swiss burger was good also. Clam chowder soup was one of the best that I’ve ever had! Portions on the dinners could have been a little larger for the price, but overall it was a great dining experience, celebrating our 2 yr old grandson’s birthday. The view is absolutely stunning.

At the Detroit zoo the prices are extremely high. Not sure what people see in American Coney. The casing on the dog was hard. Chili was tasty though. Cheese cost 1.29 on top of a 4.59 Coney…

The pbj for kids was barely 2.5″ my grandson cried, then wouldn’t eat it > 1 bite, so I tried it, it was disgusting. His fries were not the same size as ours and cold and only 11 fries in his box…this wasn’t enough food for the money Rip off!

They have some real good coney’s and fries. The prices are a bit higher than I expected, but still a good place to grab some food while you’re at the zoo

Service has been nice, can you have some chips other than sea salt and vinegar. They’re gross and I’m disappointed every time I can’t have some normal chips with my hot dog
