Great food and vibe plus wonderful service. Great to have a new local restaurant and bar open in downtown McLean. I am sure this place will do great! They also have a good bargain happy hour from 3pm which has a wide selection of food and drinks including cocktails. A pleasant and friendly place to meet people from the neighborhood. Outdoor seating is available for pleasant weather days as well.

Empire strikes back at Matchbox. This was our 4th visit to this location. When we arrived, the restaurant had a few guests already. We asked for a quiet booth and were seated at a booth on the far right side. It took 10 minutes for us to get an ice tea and a glass of water. We noticed that the menu had been updated since our previous visit. We ordered our appetizers, mini-burgers under a tower of fried string onion rings and mussels in white wine sauce. As a new item, the kitchen needs practice on cooking mussels. Sauce was good but mussels were over cooked and the bread was absent until requested. Dinner went downhill from here. Our entrees were the seared tuna salad and the shrimp linguini. We never got the seared tuna salad. The waiter mistakenly ordered the salmon salad. The manager did come by and apologized for the waiter’s error, commenting that it was a new menu. He asked what we wanted to do and we told him we would accept the salmon salad because we didn’t want to wait another 15 minutes for the seared tuna salad and the shrimp linguini to get colder. The menu description of the shrimp linguini was so beautiful I knew I had to have it. Boy, was the menu description wrong. The portion size was small for the price. When you finish a pasta dish, it is not unusual to soak up the remaining sauce with the bread. Regrettably, the sauce was so salty it was inedible. You will be safe to order simply things in this restaurant like burgers and pizza. Other than these, this kitchen is not capable of executing anything more complicated. They certainly are missing experienced adult supervision.

Second time getting matchbox in McLean, this time takeout. Last time dining I was waiting for extended periods of time for a waiter, which was frustrating. I think from both experiences I felt that the food was over salted, but still a solid restaurant with good food.

Have been here three times, and, as others have pointed out, the service has been inconsistent. We had one visit where nobody came to wait on us at all for 30 minutes. We were happy to chat ourselves, but it was extreme. On the plus side, the atmosphere is good, and the other two times we were there, the service was fine.

Well that was disappointing. After weeks of waiting for this restaurant to open, our first venture was forgettable meh. The 10-inch pizza was pretty thin although tasty enough, but not enough to come back. We’ll stick with the more delicious pizza of Red Tomato that’s situated right across the street.

I had a reservation for 6:30 on a Friday evening. We arrived on time and were seated quickly. We then sat for ~25 minutes waiting for a server to bring us water and/or take our orders. That never happened, so we left and went around the corner and had a fantastic pizza dinner at The Italian Oven on Old Dominion Drive.

I’ve been to Matchbox in DC and Mosaic District for over a decade now and was very excited to have one in McLean. The food was rather disappointing however. The pizza was cafeteria quality, clear an intentional victim of scale. And all that for the same price as much better food at other locations?

Seriously understaffed! Ordered appetizers and entree’s at the same time; BIG mistake! 2 Appetizers, 2 appetizers as our entree, a pizza and a dinner salad all arrived at the same time! The food was delicious however. Our waiter didn’t take care of us nearly as well as expected. Had to flag him down for drink refills and to ask why we did not get the pasta we ordered. The manager apologized for the missing food item and gave us a card for a free pizza which was very nice of her! So far I’ve had 1 good experience and 1 poor experience at this new establishment! Will give it one more try before I write it off!!!

Wow. What a disappointing experience we had. We frequent the location in Merrifield where the service and food is usually excellent, but we decided to give the McLean location a try. Our server was awful and never came back after bringing out parmesean and red pepper. Had to flag her down a few times to ask for more water, boxes, and our check. She proceeded to watch me enter the tip into the little machine which made for a very uncomfortable situation. Our food was very salty and it seemed as though the pizza recipe has changed, or perhaps a different oven is being used. We’ll continue to go the location in Merrifield but won’t be returning to this one.

I made reservations at Matchbox in McLean and ordered from their newly added Brunch menu. Pete, the manager was exceptionally accommodating with my request for pre-paying the check and ensured that my friends and I had a good time. The food is wonderful and the two servers (Christopher and Charlie) were exceptionally attentive. There is plenty of free parking and recommend making reservations during peak lunch and dinner hours. Though there is a bar, the dining area hosted quite a few families.
