Halushki and Pierogi served at the Soul Plater Cafe are so good that we had to order another plate. It was like heaven on a plate. Hospitality is what explains the people who keep coming back, and all know the owner and the family that smiles when you dine here. It’s a home, not a restaurant. Spend special time in this beautiful home, and remember to leave some food for us. We will soon return.

I stopped in Dubois PA for lunch in the middle of an 800 mile drive from DE to IL. I didn’t want the usual fast food, but I wanted to try something local. A google search brought up The Soul Platter Cafe, and the great reviews got me to stop in.

This restaurant is a must-try for any weary traveler. The volunteer only staff is exceedingly warm and generous, making sure any need you have is met. The food is homemade and very affordable at full price (8$ for a big bowl of tomato soup, a sandwich, chips, and some coleslaw) but is pay what you can so anyone can find a meal there. After chatting with us, they even covered our meal! After a long drive through Pennsylvania, this place was a beacon of light in a (literal) rainstorm.

Everyone should give this restaurant a try. I doubt you could go to a friendlier restaurant and the food was wonderful. It is such a comfortable home like atmosphere. This is the antithesis of a chain. Good local people are working hard to do good things and make people happy by serving. You have nothing to lose and so much to gain. Hopefully they will be able to expand their hours soon.

paid twice the recommended price and tipped the waitress for being a delight. But while leaving we ran into one of the owner operators and was put off by the rudeness shown towards our Appreciation of the service. walked away very confused. It’s disconcerting.

Wow! I can’t believe there is food like this in DuBois. This is the kind of stuff I used to have to go to PGH or NYC to find. The whole pay-what-you-can model is wonderful too (we always try to pay a little extra in hopes someone else can eat for lower-than-menu-prices when they need to). Even if it didn’t have that aspect, it would still be a great place to grab lunch or breakfast. Can’t wait to see them expand to more hours. (Btw, they do both cash and cards if you were wondering)
