In 1928, Alex and Alice McClard ran a tourist court, which also had a gas station and a diner that served up barbecued goat. When a traveler stayed with them and couldn’t pay his bill, he offered up a secret recipe for the world’s greatest hot sauce They took the recipe and played with it and soon the barbecue business became bigger than the tourist court or the gas station. That was the beginning of a family business now in its fourth generation.

It’s been ages since I’ve visited the original McClard’s in Hot Springs. I didn’t even know they had expanded to Little Rock. When I pulled in, I thought it was closed. There were no cars in sight but I saw the open sign. The atmosphere is completely different than the original which I missed. I ordered my favorite: Half Tamale Spread. It was still good as I remembered but I wished it had a few more onions and Frito chips but it was heaped with shredded pork and cheese. The waitress was great and friendly. It was pricey but worth the nostalgia.

The tamale spread was absolutely the best thing there. Overall good and we will be back. The only thing I would say could be improved is that the meat could be more smokey. It tasted fine but not much of a smoked flavor. I smoke meat a lot and if it’s going to be in the smoker for hours I want it to taste smoked and not roasted. But it wasn’t bad at all. That may just be how they do it there which fine. The BBQ sauce isn’t my style but it’s still good and goes well with the dishes. It’s very heavily tomato flavored and almost more like a marinara. We got Mcclards beans and potato salad as sides and I thought they were great. Got a peach cobbler too and it was great with lots of crust. Our server was Jeanne (I think) and she was absolutely fantastic.

After having visited the Hot Springs location for most of my life I was thrilled to see a Little Rock location appear. It was a little pricier and the portions were a little smaller but overall it was still a good experience. I could not put my finger on it but it seemed like the sauce was thicker even though it had the same taste. Definitely good for a quick BBQ fix

Tamale spread is really good and HUGE. This dish could easily feed two adult men. Sweet tea tastes just right and fresh brewed. Table service was excellent!!

I was close by so I decided to stop. I had sliced brisket, mashed potatoes and green beans. The brisket was ok the mashed potatoes had a smoky flavor and the green beans were from a can. The dessert was really good, I had possum pie. The highlight of the meal was my server, Whitney was an outstanding server she is the reason the 5 star rating happened.

I had the chopped pork sandwich along with a side of fried okra and walked out stuffed. Great food and staff were on top of everything we needed. I’ll definitely be back.

Wonderful pulled pork sandwiches and fresh fried okra. The sauce was super tasty. The beans were just a little too different for us.

We got a to go plate, the beans looked like white beans w/o bbq sauce but that’s what I prefer instead of everything being bbq’d down. Simply delightful, and then I bit into that tamale spread and omg. So good and I was full. An hour later, after pool time, I needed a rib, and then I needed 2 more ribs bc they were effing fire and delicious. I hate to say this, but my experience with the food from the LR location is much better than the one in Hot Springs.

Had to go order. The beef brisket sandwich tasted good but about half the sandwich was chunks of fat rather than meat. I’m sure if dine in they would have fixed the problem.
