Chef Colt Taylor of The Essex Restaurant is excited to bring the shoreline Los Charros Cantina, an homage to authentic Mexican street food. Bringing an extremely casual, family forward approachable restaurant, Los Charros is aimed at simple affordable fun food. Bringing his love of the authenticity and spice of traditional regional Mexican Cuisine in the style of a refined taqueria that respects the heritage of all 7 regions of the food centric country. Layering is the cornerstone of flavors from salsas to moles, proper organic heirloom corn from Oaxaca, and a true respect for the peppers and cheeses of the regions. This fun and casual new concept is in the open kitchen, bar room, and newly added al fresco dining area with a kids menu!

New location but the same high quality you know and love. The selection has a lot of the foundational Latin foods you would expect to see at a cantina- but real high-class execution and some new spins you may not have seen before. Chef Colt Taylor brings his attention to detail and his eye for enchantments and it really shows in every part of the food, drink, and atmosphere. We attended the soft opening and were able to try a fair amount of the menu before being overly stuffed. The Xo Chili was rich but was a great step up to a homey classic. The salsa flight, as simple as it sounds, showed variety and character between each one. It’s still finding legs in its new location for sure, but it’s already going strong.

We just had a few things but it was all very good. Most of the salsa is very mild for me but tastey. A very good Margarita and the price was fair. We are looking forward to going again.

A friend and I visited Los Charros for Cinco de Mayo, and we were not disappointed! We opted to do the five course prix fixe tasting menu, and every course was incredible! Chef Taylor’s cooking is truly fantastic. We were fortunate to be seated in the new lounge area of the restaurant, which added a really cool flare to our experience. Though they were quite busy, they handled the crowd well, and the staff was very professional. I travel down this way a lot during the summer and plan on making Los Charros one of my frequent places to stop at!

The food is very good and nice selection of cocktails. I recommend the chilaquiles (nachos) for an app. We had tacos … Cod Tempura and Peruvian Chicken – both were excellent. Nice venue including indoor and outdoor seating.

My friends and I have dined at this restaurant several times and it gets better with every visit. The staff are young and very highly trained. The Manger Andreas is excellent. He’s also very proud of his restaurant and especially his staff. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone who enjoys Mexican food or if your new to Mexican food I would strongly recommend you give this restaurant a try.

This place has a wide selection of quality tequilas that are not easy to come by in Essex, CT. The choice of multiple flights is enjoyable and the food is better than one would think. Hats off to Nancy the bar manager who made our stay welcoming and pleasurable
