Our 5-course meal was actually 7 courses. What a delight! We felt like judges on a Food Network show! The combinations of flavors and layers of texture were phenomenal, and the suggested wine pairings only accentuated the experience. There were a couple items that we didn’t like (the root veggies were too earthy in flavor), but I wouldn’t know if I hadn’t tried them. Love the focus on fresh ingredients that are locally-sourced. This is farm to table at its finest! The environment was intimate and looked like a diner, but it was still comfortable. Even though we live 90 minutes away, it was worth the drive. We’ll be back for another celebratory visit sometime!

This was a wonderful dining experience. I was passing through this little town and decided to take a chance on its best restaurant. Boy, am I glad that I did! The food was amazing. Creative. Delicious. Satiating. My server (Meghan) and the guy who brought out the food were really helpful, describing each dish and offering suggestions on the five-course menu. I highly recommend a visit if you’re anywhere near I-81 in Virginia.

This restaurant was definetely interesting. Everything was simple from plates, tables, to its menu. The space was probably not originally designed for a restaurant, and the sit-down space felt as part of the kitchen area behind.

Very unique menu, with a different tasting plate served each course. Completely different from anything else encountered locally.

Had an awesome meal here to kick off our wedding weekend. The food was fantastic, the service was exceptional and we can’t wait to come back to town and go here again to try out what they come up with next. Just a great all around evening!

Let me give you some reasons why you need to visit Staunton, Virginia and come to The Shack. Menu is the last image if you’re curious. There is a 4 or 5 Course option and each course has two options. We did the 5 Course and got the entire menu. There were 3 additional courses which were the same not on the menu. Chef Ian and his team were phenomenal.

This is an amazing dining experience in Staunton VA in the heart of Shenandoah Valley! Well worth the drive from DC or elsewhere. The prix fixe menu changes with the growing season, ingeniously combining Jewish and Eastern European inspired fare with Appalachian cooking to create original and delicious options. The excellent wine pairing added another level of fun and adventure. The menu is James Beard level, but the atmosphere is down home and unpretentious. A one of a kind experience not to be missed.

Went thinking it had been on Diners, Dives and Drive ins, but it was a misunderstanding. Simply recommended. It’s a set menu of local menu selections with a flair. No reservations the night we went but looks nice.

Highly recommended by local friends, I found the wait staff quick and attentive, the music playlist surprisingly fun and not interruptive, and the food was well executed, flavorful, served warm and the textures were perfect. My friend and I shared several dishes in order to taste more. The scrambled eggs were fluffy and the perfect British “wet” eggs, scrumptious, a balance of cheese and green onions. The Latkes were savory, crisp, and was my choice for my “last bite.” The mushroom grits were creamy with a full mushroom flavor, the cornbread crust offered a nice cornmeal crunch, and a perfect foil for pear jam and whipped sorghum butter. I was grateful the chestnut crepe was a light bite, so I could explore the shavings and syrup, ever a lover of that nut. For a tiny space that requires a reservation, The Shack offers a serious and loving treatment of comfort food with a modern twist. I look forward to trying a dinner.

It was worth the cost. Definitely the most high end fine dining experience you will get in Staunton. The atmosphere goes with the name– nothing fancy in appearance about The Shack. The food says it all.
