Having lived in Chicago previously, I was thrilled to discover this, with their Chicago Style hot dogs. They’re just as I remember them, as is the Maxwell Street polish sausage. The onion rings are probably my favorite of any place, as the batter is crunchy yet light, and it doesn’t overpower the onions. The portions, when it comes to fries and onion rings and drinks, are quite large. I could do with smaller drink size availability. The chocolate cake is practically decadent, and they will give you a free piece on your birthday if you register your birth date. The atmosphere is really fun and upbeat, with a lot of old photos that include the first version of Portillo’s way back when, and vintage signs and other memorabilia on the wall. Service is great. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten in there when someone didn’t come by and check to make sure it’s all okay. From the counter people that take the orders to the people who call out your order in rhyme when it’s ready, they’ve all been friendly when I’ve been in there. It’s very clean. It’s kid-friendly, and parking in the lot in front is plentiful. Also there is a really nice outdoor patio to sit at during good weather.

It was a great last minute road trip to go to Maple Grove, MN ( MPLS) to eat at Portillo’s restaurant. Portillo’s has late night hours. The service was friendly and helpful from start to finish. Since we had driven such a long way we ordered a lot. I’m definitely a foodie when I travel. I had the best Chicago style hotdog. I also tried a Strawberry and Lemon cake shake. The cake is inside the shake very sweet and I couldn’t eat but a third of it. I liked the crinkle cut fries and also tried a bite of a hamburger. The hamburger tasted fresh off the grill and lots of fresh produce toppings. The classic Americana decorations nice too and there are public restrooms. The place is very dressed down casual and great eats.

Maxwell street polish is my favorite menu item. Hubs likes the hotdogs and onion rings. We’re always tempted by the cake and when we do give in, it is tasty! The wait for food seems long. All the ice in my tea was melted by the time we got our food. Not sure if they just didn’t put enough ice in it to start or went that was. Anyway, I always enjoy stopping here for a little lunch.

The atmosphere, service and food were all above average for a hot dog joint. My wife likes the coney dog- a hot dog is a hot dog, except for Portillo’s. I love the Italian beef sandwich and Greek salad which we tried today for the first time. They were excellent and we would order them again. The place was very clean and welcoming. They have a variety of food choices.

I was pleasantly surprised, I have to say. It was a first time visit for us. Don’t let the name fool you, this is not Mexican food. Italian meat sandwiches, and the Double cheeseburger were both awesome. The staff was super friendly and very helpful! My wife and I enjoyed the food and the place very much.
