Chavez Mexican Restaurante officially opened on Monday, February 13th 2023.
The Mexican restaurant is located at 5494 E. State St., which was home to the former Tumbleweed Southwest Grill, which closed in 2008, and later became Ichiban and Hibachi Buffet.
“Everything has gone pretty good so far,” said owner Jose Chavez, who had initially planned to open in November but shipping delays got in the way. “I’m happy to finally open.”
Chavez previously operated Fuego Nuevo Grill on Spring Creek Road, but instead of renewing his lease, he used low-interest small business loans to buy the 6,800-square-foot location on East State Street and he changed the name.
Based on 864 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.2 stars. Price $$

Loved this place! The food was amazing, starting with a giant bowl of fresh guacamole & chips. Moving on to Chimichanga Fajitas, piping hot with a wonderful cheese sauce on top. My friend gets a Margarita big enough to swim in. Delicious. The finale is a marvelous Flan. All of that was $28.

Went here the first time tonight after several friends said it was good. Glad we did! First we stopped at the new restaurant El Vallarta, and after being ignored for half hour and other people walking out without service (it was that bad, terrible), we came here. We all tried different entrees and all were great! Margarita were good, too. Salsa was made in house and it was great, too. Best Mexican restaurant in Rockford I think.

Think of ‘upscale’ or trendy Mexican quisine. Meats used here are wood fire roasted on site. Food was very good. Average entre $15-18. Drinks also looked very refreshing but did not try one tonight. Cash only when we were there. Not certain if they were not set up for card yet or if there were issues with the card system. Decor is newer and we found the restaurant very clean. Will return.

Not the best options for vegetarians, and I do not recommend the vegetarian burrito unless you like to munch on big onions and peppers. Not awful or anything, but not fantastic either. Husband really liked his margarita

I am a first generation Mexican and I can confirm this is the most authentic tasting Mexican restaurant in Rockford. The atmosphere was great and the interior decor was to die for. This was my first time but I will for sure be returning with my family.

I cannot say I loved the food but that being said it was very very good and I will be going back because in Rockford I consider it one of the top 5 best Mexican restaurants and Mariella was a very good waitress We did wait for quite a while but considering the restaurant is new and they were packed I was fine sitting drinking a goo lold frozen margarita and eating tortilla chips and salsa
