3.9 on a good day! Adequate trained staff with more people in the kitchen, and this place could probably be 5 stars! The food is good, not going to lie, but you will WAIT at least 15/20 minutes to order and another hour before you get it. So, if you don’t mind waiting, give it a try!

I truly wanted to give a better rating but I was not impressed. The atmosphere could use an upgrade. The service was OK, they were very nice and accommodating but staff needs to stop being loud. Their conversations could be heard and were not for the restaurant. The food was OK and I mean just ok. First of all its served in a take out tray. Yes a take out tray, even though we dined in. Secondly, I could taste that the chicken was cooked in burned grease, my cabbage, rice and gravy had no flavor; the corn bread was OK though I think it was store bought. The liver and onions were OK but not what you expect when you think of soul food. Very little flavor. So for me Bowman’s is a no. I don’t recommend this place at all. But just so you know they were quite busy with takeout orders. I guess that’s why it took nearly 45 minutes to get our food. So if you have time to waste waiting for bland food give them a try.

I was dining in and ordered a catfish meal with greens and potato salad. The meal was served in a styrofoam carryout container and plastic cup instead of dine plates and silverware.

Ordered ribs half slab it was good but the only thing that threw me off was the back the membrane fatty part was still there. No cornbread was in my box it was supposed to be, greens was a lil salty and the Mac and cheese was okay as well.

We were visiting from Buffalo NY and we found this place on line. You need to bring your patience. The food is cooked to order so it takes time, but I can assure you when it arrives, fresh and piping hot from the kitchen it was well worth the wait! We ordered the crack wings for the table that were in a sweet and tangy sauce. The wings were meaty and crispy and with two teenage boys at the table and my husband I was lucky to get one. But I savored that one!! I ordered the salmon cakes that were incredible. Crispy, fresh and light as a feather. Best I ever had. My husband’s smothered pork chops were delish and the boys each got chicken and waffles which they devoured. All the sides were great but the little loaves of cornbread that accompanied each order were extraordinary. Sweet and fluffy like little pound cakes.The staff were friendly, warm and welcoming. We even got a chance to chat with the cook and owner. It is the kind of place you want to hang out, chat and eat all day. To top it off it was SUPER affordable. We are going to need to come back to Hampton just to visit this place again. I have a feeling I will be having dreams of feathery light salmon cakes and ice tea until we can make it back!

I took my mom in here for her birthday. I didn’t know what to expect. I was getting frustrated because the food was taking so long. Well……….. when the food came out it didn’t disappoint. It took so long because they cooked it fresh to eat. Everything was fresh and crispy as fried food should be. Excellent . I will be back. They cook their dried chicken the best way. The hood way!

I was visiting family from out of town and my family was excited to dine here because of the karaoke night. Halfway through the night the owner gets on the mic and declares that “ we should all be supporting him because its a black business and buying a iced tea is not support”….. VERY TACKY. Then he was mad cause no one clapped after he put the mic back (embarrassing)… maybe 25 mins later he gets back on the mic and kicks us ALL OUT . He cut Karaoke night short (my family didn’t even get to sing) and pointed someones grandmother out and told her she cant come back cause shes cheap … in-front of EVERYONE. . . It was packed, that poor lady had tears in her eyes trying to explain herself. My family spent almost $200 alone that night, so kicking EVERYONE out for one lady was uncalled for and rude. I don’t live in VA but when I visit I will NEVER come back here again

We were traveling, and located this gem via Google. The place was nearly deserted (about an hour before close). The food we had was great (though I took some fried fish to go to my daughter, and she and my partner didn’t like it). The music was right up our alley. The waitress was very friendly, and interacted with us like she was really happy to have us there. We’ll definitely stop back in on our next visit to the area!

Went on a Thurs evening for Shrimp and grits but they were out of grits and a couple of other things. Asked for my beer of choice only to be told they were out, got a second beer and realized it was non-alcoholic so I got my third choice.
