We went on a Sunday for Brunch at around 1:30. I didn’t like that the DJ was breaking down when we arrived, as brunch was not yet over. The service was ok, our waiter seemed quite flustered the majority of the time we were there.

My family and I were passing through Birmingham tonight, and we had some awesome southern cuisine at SOCU! Salmon, fried shrimp, “Oceans 11,” seafood cornbread dressing, crawfish gravy, candied bacon deviled eggs…all soooo good! Shout out to Dreke and Brianna for taking such great care of our table –thank you!!!

Disclaimer: Eat at your own risk! We were excited to go to eat at this restaurant due to the rave about it within the city. The drinks were really great and had a good taste. As well as we had the half chicken and mac n cheese. Everything had a great taste; our dining experience became a two star when there were roaches within the dining area of our seating in where we was eating. We weren’t afforded any apologies or disclaimer for this issue. I’m not sure if this an establishment issue or a facility, but even though we each paid an average of $70 a meal including a tip this is just unacceptable and disgusting. I’m hoping this issue will be resolved.

Sadly, I don’t think they’re going to last long. It took forever!! We got there at 6:30. The table was ready so we were seated immediately. Cool. People had ordered drinks at the bar and it took about an hr for them to get those drinks. It took forever for us to even be able to order and then forever for us to get the food! We got food at 8:40. They were not crowded at all! I had the shrimp and grits which were decent. I also had the seafood dressing which wasn’t really good and also tiny! All of the sides were super tiny.

I wanted to rave about this place so bad. I can’t deny the service was good but the food was subpar. We had reservations for 8pm , we got there a few minutes early and they seated us immediately, but unfortunately we were there for over 2 hours! The cooks in the kitchen were visibly working hard but the wait times are just too long. The fried chicken was pretty good, not the best I have had. The collard greens were horrible too many stems over seasoned to compensate for fast cooking. They had a sweet taste that I didn’t care for. The dirty rice had a good flavor but was complete mush, like it had been sitting. I would rather you keep it cold and reheat instead of keeping it warm and the rice turning to mush. The $13 premium side macaroni and cheese was a complete disaster. The cheese crust wasnt even a good cheese for the price. It was like preshredded cheese, the noodles were way over cooked mush, no cheese flavor, when I peeled back the cheese crust it was like a thin milky substance at the bottom. Zero flavor. A complete waste of money. The fried shrimp had a good crunch on them but were not seasoned at all. The only side dish I truly enjoyed was the jalepeno corn. My husband did enjoy the chicken and waffles and the garlic mashed potatoes. Overall experience was not good. I plan to give them another try at brunch to see if my experience changes.

Reservation was at 5:30 didn’t sit down until 6:45 after informing manager that we had been told 20 min then 10 min then another 20 min. If it wasn’t for the wait due to the lack of staff available I would have rated it a 5. The food was delicious but took a while to come out. It was piping hot though. The deviled eggs are delicious. The manager apologized for the wait and provided the Bacon deviled eggs appetizer free. I do believe since they are short staff the hostess can assist more besides just checking in guests and standing by bar she can ensure guests get refills, help bring out food when cooks have it ready, and help clear off tables. Also place time limit limit on how long you can sit at table because one table of 6 was there before 5:30 and when we left at 8:45 they were still sitting there talking with to go plates.

Disappointed beyond belief! We were excited to visit this restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary but was quickly wishing we went to another establishment within 30mins of the visit. Our reservations were for 5:30pm on a Wednesday evening and we were seated promptly. We started our order with cocktails (The Derby& Old Fashioned) and the Chargrilled oysters. My husband’s Old Fashioned was absolutely disgusting to the point were he couldn’t even force himself to drink it. Although reluctant, he informed our waitress and she ensured him the bartender could make it correctly on the 2nd try( 2nd was MUCH better). Then comes our Oysters……..As soon as the waitress placed them on our table their was this strong smell as if something is burned. We hoped it was the toasted bread but almost half of our oysters had a strong taste of liquid smoke or charcoal. Next up…..Main course. I ordered the Cajun Pasta but was informed they were out of Lobster but could add extra Shrimp. My Husband selected the Fish of the day which was Salmon w/ Garlic Mash potatoes, Zucchini and Squash Medley, and the Jalapeno creamed corn. Sadly, when my pasta was placed on the table I immediately knew it was not fresh.( I think it was from Monday night since they are closed on Tuesdays). It was clearly microwaved as the fat had began to separate from the cream, which made a oily mess at the bottom of my bowl. My husband enjoyed his dish but had the same oily consistency from his cream corn. Although we initially planned to order the Peach cobbler and more drinks, we decided at that point we could not allow further disappointment to arise and requested our bill. I would love for the staff to focus on the customers and meal preparation more than congregating with fellow workers within the Pizitz food hall. It seemed like a revolving door of people coming by to simply “Kick it”. *Sigh* I really wanted to be in love with this place but for the price of our food you really would expect someone to indeed care about what they are presenting to their patrons. I dreaded making this review but I hope management will digest it as an opportunity to do better so they can ensure their presence in the city of Birmingham is not short lived.

Loved this place. They were short staffed so that part of the experience was less than, but the food was AMAZING- the best meal I’ve had in a long time. And the staff were super kind and welcoming. Will def go back again.

We came for a Date Night dinner after seeing KJ’s Elegant Pastries bring their staff. We had the SOCU oysters they were delicious! I got Oceans 11 and my husband got the fish and grits. Oceans 11 was delicious – pan seared scallops, shrimp and salmon on mashed potatoes with a crawfish sauce on top was to die for!! We will definitely be back
