Originally opened in 1962, Dear John’s has served many locals and out of towners over the decades. It was closed for a number of years, and recently re-opened by two restaurateurs, and they did a great job of maintaining how it looked, for the most part, back in the 60s or early 70s. It’s very dark on the inside, like an East Coast style steakhouse. They have a large full bar as well. As mentioned in some of the other reviews parking is very limited. There’s about 10 spaces in the small parking lot attached to the side, otherwise it will be street parking, however, a parking pass is needed to park in the neighborhood next to it.

I dined at DJ last Friday night. Its a restaurant that I’ve been wanting to try for a very long time. I’m rating it 3 starts because of the cocktail served to us – Ordered an old fashioned and I’m pretty disappointed to say it unfortunately was probably the worst old-fashioned thats ever been served to me- the drink was bitter and not balanced and since we ordered two and both tasted like that it was def not a one off incident. I didn’t order another drink after. Unfortunately, that did kick us off on the wrong foot; but the food was good; pics of my order attached. Providing this feedback less as a complaint but more as a MUST have area of improvement for a restaurant like this – its def a deterrent for me to come back and due to this experience I’ve moved a reservation for 4 that I had here to a different restaurant.

Great atmosphere with the lighting and music. Service was amazing, and lots of classic dishes with a light touch.

Had a dinner here because of recent magazine writeup about this restaurant reopened under the direction of chef Roekenwagner. What a disappointment. The place has nothing to do with the Hollywood glamour the press claimed it to be. the interior is small, dark with very low ceiling. It is claustrophobic. Food was surprisingly bland. And even garlic bread was made from (seemingly) spongy supermarket bread. Restroom was dirty and out of soup.

The food is wonderful and the service is quite good. The portions are large. I had a New York steak that was 16 Oz, all meat, no bone. It was cooked exactly as I asked. The restaurant is small so you will need a reservation. This is an expensive place. If you can eat here for $100 a person, you aren’t ordering sides or alcohol. We spent $700 for the four of us, and we brought our own wine. Worth it, if you can afford it.

Old school and amazing in every way. Sit inside for the fullest experience. Must get the Caesar. Can’t go wrong with any of the steaks. Great food. Great atmosphere (small, dark, everything well done). Great staff.

The food is phenomenal. Best center-cut grilled pork chop I have ever had. Service is amazing, too. And you can’t beat the 1962 Dear John’s vibe and history. So glad this classic place was saved from Covid shutdown fate.

Service and atmosphere are all this place has going for it. Food was mediocre at best- Boring menu. As others have said, the food is bland. It’s a shame as I won’t be returning.

We had a reservation at the outdoor patio space since indoors had a pre paid requirement.
