I was looking forward to trying this new ramen place in Old Town but I won’t be returning. The restaurant itself is lovely. Nice decor and live the new wood smell. The food, however, was somewhere between indifferent and underwhelming. The blistered shishito peppers were fine, but seems really overpriced at $10 for a small bowl. (And stacking two bowls on top of each other to create an illusion of size actually draws more attention to the serving size.) The ramen itself was fine. The noodles were springy and chewy in a good way, but was ultimately let down by the broth. The tonkotsu (pork bone) broth had a certain richness reminiscent of the real stuff in Japan but the only taste that came through was the funk of the bamboo shoots. I couldn’t chew through the fat in the pork chashu, which could have been better cooked or grilled. At nearly $20 a bowl, especially if you choose to add a topping or so, this is no affordable meal for university students despite the restaurant’s name. (Gaku means school and was supposedly inspired by ramen shops in university campuses in Japan. Laudable idea that would ideally be reflected in the taste and prices.) And don’t bother with the $1 spicy option; it’s just a teaspoon of some sriracha like sauce.

I think what best sums up Gaku is overpriced and underwhelming.

Food is satisfying! I ordered pick-up/to-go 2x today; for our staff downtown and ramen for dinner for myself and husband. Staff member Dave was very helpful as well as the manager.

This new, beautifully decorated spot is already hopping and serving ramen as good as I enjoyed when living in Tokyo. The friendly, enthusiastic staff added to a delightful experience. We also loved the Gaku Ramen branch in Boulder on Pearl Street.

This place was so bad I had to create an account just to post my only food review ever. Overpriced, chicken over cooked yet under browned due to their tiny size, seems like everything was cut with a slap chop machine. It took nearly 10 minutes before our server even noticed us, and the Assistant GM spent more time at our table than our server. Dinner was extremely uncomfortable with multiple service staff members staring while standing at a back wall, yet never cleared our plates or helped us; the chef also walked by multiple times and stood right in front of our table just to watch the TV, even while we were waiting for a menu. Pork slices with the Tonkatsu is an absolute joke, two tiny bland pieces of paper, for a nearly 20 dollar bowl of very okay ramen. Would not recommend at all unless you enjoy being ripped off and starving.

This restaurant was soooo freaking yummy!!! This was my first time at this location since its opening in Old town! Not to mentuon, this was also my first time having real Ramen and not the boxed Ramen! Let’s just say, I am NEVER going back to boxed Ramen, ever! I had the Tonkotsu! (Pork broth, pork chashu, Kikurage mushrooms, bamboo shoots, and Scallions) The server and the manager were so personable, it made the experience all the better! I will definitely be coming back!! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

While I did enjoy my meal overall, I had slightly higher expectations after looking at the premium pricing.

I reallllly wanted to like this place but I’m sad to say I’m disappointed. I ordered the pork belly fried rice and the rice was sooo mushy, it was gross. The pork belly was just okay. For $17 I expected a lot better

The food was alright, nothing to write home amount. The $1 to “make it spicy”was literally a squirt of sriracha. I’m struggling to wrap my head around the pricing at this place. I eat out A LOT, and this place just isn’t worth the price. The broth is bland, and the price for add ons just feels like getting nickel & dimed for things that come standard at other ramen restaurants.
