I have fond memories of eating here with my grandparents when I was younger. At that time, I would say it was an average restaurant with average to slightly above average food. I live nearby now, but the reviews within the past few years made me not feel like trying it again. However! Yesterday, I got coupons in the mail and decided to take a chance. I am glad I did! Although it was a take-out order, I could see the place was fairly busy, the inside appeared clean, the staff was nice, and our food was hot and ready to be picked up upon arrival. I had the beef fajita burrito which was huge and smothered in creamy queso. The beef was tender and juicy. Good flavor on the rice and beans. I got a side of chips, guacamole, and salsa and these alone made me believe I will have to dine in next time! Salsa wasn’t runny and had a kick to it. The chips are fairly thin, not too greasy, light and crispy. I could do some damage in a basket of those! We also tried the half pound bacon cheeseburger on a jalapeno bun. I was surprised at how delicious a cheeseburger from a Tex-Mex restaurant could be! I was surprised the prices were so competitive and I felt it was a good deal for the amount of food there was. I will be returning to this location soon.

On March 25th 2023. Evening. The food was ok, but the chips were mostly crumbs. Got our salsa and queso before we even got drinks. All we got was ice water with lemon, but the server kept forgetting. Restaurant wasn’t busy at all. We informed our server that we would also have a to go order. She completely forgot. I had to ask the manager who acted like he didn’t know what he was doing and didn’t care either because he was too concerned with the basketball game on tv. So now we’re waiting on a to go order after we’ve finished eating. We’ve been coming here for years. It is usually good and wait staff aren’t bad. And to top things off the manager stood there watching the basketball game by our table. He cared more about that than his customers. The server said they only had one cook. She was the only server tonight also. But the manager was hanging out by the parking lot in between his tv watching. We won’t be back. We did tip the server because it isn’t all her fault. The manager didn’t set the bar very high. He didn’t even check on us either although drinks were empty and we had just complained of an issue. The parking lot was secure I guess. This was the location in the West Tulsa area by Big Lots. On a high note, the cook in the back did an amazing job. Seems like they were the only one willing to work.

This restaurant has continually gone downhill the last year or so. The salsa is so hot you can’t eat it. The tortilla soup recipe has changed. I did not like it. The carnitas tacos were good but served barely warm which is a health risk. Service was great.

We arrived at the restaurant at 7:30, their hours stated they closed at 9. We were there a total of maybe 20 minutes. Our waiter was very nice but the manager had some sort of issue and was stalking around the restaurant angrily. Before we were able to finish our order our waiter let us know the manager wanted to close and asked him to ask us to hurry up even though it was 7:40. The waiter was kind and said that he would make our meals himself if we would like to stay, however we didn’t want to bother so we just tipped and left. I would like to emphasize how kind our waiter was, none of it was his fault, but I did feel the need to let whoever the owners are know as it was very unprofessional of that manager and the manager seemed to be bullying the staff.

Staff attitude was horrible food horrible enchilada platter not good sweet chili sauce yuck! And who puts celery in queso? It was nine dollars for the small one…El Chico is way better! This restaurant I use to eat here in 2016 left Tulsa area trust this is NOT the place to eat when visiting Tulsa!

Very disappointed. We have been coming to this location for 16 years. It’s been one of our favorite places. It was so bad we thought they must have sold out. A new manager has taken it over. Not for the better. The food was dry and flavorless. The building was dirty and ran down. Our waitress was nice until I questioned my food. It was so bad we won’t be going back.

This was my time at Monterey’s. The food was okay, but I thought it was really expensive. We probably won’t be going back. The salsa was pretty good. They have a queso bowl that they say they are famous for and it was $8.99 and hardly any queso.
