Blue Toba Menu – Ashland, OR

Type : Indonesian restaurant

Location : Ashland, OR

~ Hundreds of years of tradition is in every dish that Blue Toba offers. With spices Chef Birong brings back from Indonesia, he imbues not only the alchemy that is inherent in Indonesian cooking, but also its depth of culture & heart ~
In August 2022, Blue Toba expanded to a downtown Ashland location after 8 years in a tiny ‘hole-in-the-wall.’ You might see old photos and menus and an old logo from our previous location, or even when we first reopened in our new location when searching through the photos here, and other places on the internet. Our website is the only place for all things updated & current. There you will see our beautifully expanded space, and the expanded deliciousness of what we offer now.

The food was delicious and the owner was very friendly! Overall 5 stars out of 5!! The only reason I’m rating service specifically 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was really difficult to get the attention of the servers. If we’d been able to get the staff’s attention in time we would have ordered more drinks. I believe that some of the staff is new so I’m hoping this will get better with time.

Chef B’s rendang (Indonesian beef curry) truly is THE BEST in US! I’ve tried rendang dish from Indonesian restaurants across US as well as home catering, cultural markets, you name it but no one ever comes close to Chef B’s! Growing up in Indonesia, I know that this national dish takes no shortcut to get it just right with such complex flavor and perfect texture – Chef B nails it so perfectly that I can feel the love and passion he puts into his cooking. My kids are familiar with rendang dish but they would only eat it if it’s absolutely not spicy. Chef B’s rendang has some spiciness (again the perfect amount of kick) but my kids said they don’t mind the heat/spiciness at all if the dish is this good! His other dishes are truly phenomenal too! The restaurant itself is really beautiful, decorated with many Indonesian traditional art pieces and I marveled at the attention to detail. The decor really is a work of love by Chef B’s wife, Leslie. Coming to this restaurant, it feels like you’re being welcomed by friends to their home. Chef B and Leslie, the owners were very very gracious and their staffs were friendly and kind. It was easily one of the best meals and we’re very lucky to experience Blue Toba. This restaurant is such a gem in Ashland, OR!! I only wish Houston, TX – Ashland, OR is not that far! 🙂

Rendang is a complex and time consuming dish and in Malaysia is only served during special celebrations. To have it accessible and as well prepared as Chef Birong’s is such a gift. I’d been looking forward to this since I first planned my trip to Ashland months ago. It did not disappoint. But the welcome from Leslie, service (my young waiter lived in Indonesia), creative drinks, decor, and music selection were all superb. I came back for happy hour next day!

I haven’t written a review this quickly in a long time – RUN, don’t walk, here! The rendang was sooo good I mean it was delicious, like you wish you could have seconds, like lick the plate good. The cocktail I had was also really nice.

My husband and I enjoy eating at Blue Toba about twice a month. With our food allergies, we have not tried everything on the menu. But what we have tried has been cooked and seasoned beautifully! And the service is really good. And by the way, we also love their version of rice pudding for dessert!

We discovered this wonderful Indonesian restaurant steps from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival venues! Absolutely delicious food – the best chicken satay I’ve ever tasted and a tender, long simmered beef rendang with complex and intriguing flavors. We saw Chef B and met his wife Wendy – they own this restaurant and put their soul into making it a welcoming and peaceful place to enjoy authentic Indonesian cuisine. Great cocktails and shrubs too!

This was our first time eating at Blue Toba and I was delighted! The ambiance was modern but still bohemian and really encompasses Indonesian style. Our food was delicious and the service was great! I had the Mie Goreng noodle dish with tofu, and my partner enjoyed the Rendang. Even the dessert brought me back to wonderful memories, it’s no wonder this place has been a buzz about town! We’ll be back for sure.
