Saffron Menu – Newport News, VA

Type : Mediterranean restaurant

Location : Newport News, VA

Saffron’s owner shares that Afghanistan is a country of over 10,000 years old and its people have learned so many ways of cooking with spices and creating amazing flavors. He believes that food will bring people peacefully together. He knows how very important it is to get to know each customer and build a relationship with them. In fact, David refers to customers as “guests” and they are treated as such.

The delicious food offerings not only come from Afghanistan, but also Iran, Turkey, Lebanon and Greece. All of the foods contain rich spices hailing from Afghanistan. Saffron, the spice that the restaurant is named after, comes from Afghanistan. The special flat bread used for dipping into the unique sauces is made in his bakery in NY.

It was phenomenal! The host was very gracious and attentive, the price was very reasonable, and the quality was exceedingly good. I highly recommend the lamb kebab, the rices it came with were awesome.

This place is the best. The waitress/owner was so nice and the service was amazing. They have the best chicken kabobs ever. If you are looking for good Mediterranean food in the Hilton village area,I 150% recommend going to this restaurant. And the interior of the building is beautiful. And the bread is very good.

My friend and I ate here this evening- my first time. The owner was lovely and took time to explain the menu about what countries were represented on menu and a bit about each dish. We ended up with some of the Afghan dishes and everything was delicious and well seasoned. We both enjoyed the Persian tea with dinner— highly recommend!

What a great place! The outside doesn’t look impressive but the inside is beautiful and feels very comfortable. We got to chat a lot with the owner Daud (or David) who was very helpful explaining about the food and the spices. We started with the hummus which was some of the best I’ve had out of the middle east. For lunch I had the lamb kabob and my wife had the beef kabobs, and then finished off with some dessert that was essentially two large cookies and some Persian tea. Everything was amazing and we’ll definitely return!

Absolute wonderful place. Went there for lunch and loved the food. Don’t let the outside of the place fool you. The interior is a bit outdated but the waiter was wonderful and the food was excellent

If you drive too fast driving down Warwick blvd, you’ll miss the faded Saffron sign. Small place which was probably an Open House diner at one time. Had dolmas which were really good. There was a green sauce which was a little spicy and a white, probably yogurt sauce. I had the lamb kabob with 3 different rices. I had the saffron rice, but didn’t really taste that much saffron. There was some raisins and carrots on some of the rice. Not a huge fan of that. My friend had the turkey kabob which looked to be like chicken. Looked good. For dessert, the one cookie with cinnamon and some other spices was good. I don’t know why I’d gotten the chocolate cake which was really dry. The food was alright. Would I go back, I don’t know.

Stopped in with some friends based on a recommendation from one of them. We were the only guests upon arrival and we seated ourselves but another party arrived halfway through our stop.

THIS PLACE IS AMAZING. Great people, fantastic food, and beautiful decor — what’s not to love? The kabobs are to die for.The owner and chef are extraordinary and work hard to make sure your experience is fun and pleasant. I have severe gluten allergies and they made sure I knew what everything was and what I could and couldn’t eat. Without a doubt, my favorite spot in Newport News!

This place was amazing! From the appetizers to the dessert, every dish was extremely flavorful, wonderfully cooked, served hot or cold as designated. And the service was impeccable. Beautiful settings. Well worth the time and price. Enough food for a second meal (for me, anyway). Can’t wait to go back! I absolutely loved the Persian tea with rose water.
