Dela Curo Curry Menu – Oakland, CA

Type : Japanese curry restaurant

Location : Oakland, CA

Described on Check, Please! as ‘smoother than Luther Vandross,’ Chef Chikara Ono’s delicious black curry is the perfect complement to his tender kurobuta tonkatsu, shrimp, or a tender, jiggly Japanese-style omu (omelette), and his vegetarian curry is delicious, too. His dishes are unlike any others in the Bay Area and have consistently received critical acclaim, with one food writer saying the black curry sauce was so good, she wanted to lick the plate clean!

Good service and the Swan’s Market is a nice place but the katsu curry wasn’t amazing. As other reviewers noted, the katsu was crispy on the outside but unseasoned and tough on the inside. They should use the double fry method for a more juicy cutlet. Also, flavor wise, the sauce was more like a brown gravy than a (Japanese) curry.

The curry has some rich flavor, the price is relatively reasonable as well. However some of the smaller details were missing. The pork katsu is fried nicely but there is no seasoning on it so if you do t have it with the curry for a bite, it’s just a dry flavorless piece of pork. Also the dish actually needs a little more cabbage to have as a palate cleanser in between the bites of curry. As for the fruit sando, it was pretty tasty but I couldn’t eat the crusts because they were pretty hard to chew through.

Food was very good. The photo of the pork katsu curry that I posted is almost an exact map of the photo in their menu, so bonus points for consistency!

A rare gem in Oakland city center. Delicious, authentic curry is hard to find. Their pork cutlets and chicken katsu is also amazing! 10/10

I’ve never heard of black curry before this, and not going to lie, was a bit scared of trying this. But oh boy did this blow my mind! I think this place is a secret gem, it’s simply wonderful and maybe even unique! I’m a big fan of curry and katsu as a whole! The black curry was strong, but not too strong. The staff that helped us was extremely nice. It had a very nice calm and quiet atmosphere but I don’t know, I went on a weekday so maybe that’s why it was quiet but I enjoyed my time there with outside sitting.

I wanted curry, and it was everything I wanted in that moment. The pork was super juicy, crispy, and tender. The sauce was savory and flavorful. The pickles included were fresh and fragrant. The take out order took about 10 minutes to fill. There are some seats if you want to eat at the stall as well. Highly recommend if you’re in the area and want a quick, delicious bite to eat!

The curry here is bussin, as the kids would say. There’s a Japanese spot in Mountain View called Yugen that makes bomb katsu curry. Since moving to Oakland I’ve been trying to find a place that compares to Yugen and this place does it for me. Dela Curo will be my go to spot for Japanese curry when the craving hits. It’s a small quaint shop in the swans market but dont be fooled. Try it! You will not be disappointed.

Personally love Japanese foods. I was so happy to find a Japanese Curry place. Foods were good. Tasted very similar to Japan. In fact, much better than Soba Ichi.

Visited for the first time and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The curry was rich in flavor with a slightly tang. I’m pretty picky with my rice and I liked that their rice was done right. We got the pork katsu and the fried chicken that I forgot to take photo of and they were freshly fried super juicy inside. Overall, both dishes tasted great and good portion size. Double thumbs up from me! Will def return.
