I’ve been coming here for many years since they opened in the neighborhood. More upscale, Italian food known for their fire oven pizzas.

I saw on the news that they were one of the tip 5 pizza places in the United States. This is not so. I saw a few open seats / tables but none for me so I had to get my pizza to go. I had been anxious to taste the best. To go was fine. The hostess was friendly but a simple one size margarita pizza to go took twice as long as she said. They were busy. It was $27 and it was mostly puffy dough with a container of dipping oil. The place was packed so people do like it but it’s not for the pizza.

We came here because Food and wine ranked A16 as the second best place for pizza in America for 2023. That’s impressive. We sat outside, couldn’t get a seat inside, which is okay. The seats were okay, not great. The booth outside was good, not great.

Growing up in East Bay and Berkeley there were always some great places in Rockridge and Berkeley. When I move to Venice Beach I was disappointed with the food. That changed in the past 10 years. A16 reminded me of one of the great Venice places when I moved back after 18 years. After my 4th time here in 3 months I have to say that I’m disappointed in their quality. The pizzas are great (but that’s not hard with a Mugnaini oven or whatever) and some of the small plates are also okay. But out of the 4 main dishes that I have had, only two were good. Last night my pork chop was like the hard heart of a republican. I could barely cut it and, dude I work out. I have almost never sent food back, but I just could eat this. I think A16 is just not for me. The worst part is that I left hungry. See picture for the offending shoe.

What an amazing place. Food, atmosphere, cocktails, service, on and on. We like to sit at the chefs counter, and watch the pizza get made. Dinner and show! It can be really busy 6pm-8pm so we tend to go later.

Fav spot is to sit at the bar and down a pizza plus calamari apps. Seasonal pizza was artichoke! Fancy cocktails also and there’s always great service/attention from the bar tenders.

Third time here. Never again. The bill came and a gin martini was $18. It was itemized like this $14 for gin, $2 for vermouth and $2 for martini. $2 to put the booze in a glass? Yes. The waiter removed the charge when I asked about it, however the establishment is out of its mind. No thanks.

I the reviews vary on A16, including within my own family, but I think their experiences have much more to do with the affects of the pandemic (short staffing, trouble getting high quality staff, etc) rather than the longer term quality of their restaurant. I’ve been there a few times over the last few years. They changed their menu recently to focus more on exotic pizzas rather than entrees. Food: The pizzas are definitely good and should be tried. We also had (at the table) three of their entrees: the Braised Cod; Roasted Chicken; and Shrimp Linguini. All three got great reviews. We ordered most of the deserts: the Bombolonis (stuffed donut holes) were excellent…but only came with 3; the Panna Cotta was also thoroughly enjoyed. Service: they were relatively fast and friendly. Not all meals were delivered at one time (the last was almost 10 mins from the first)…but again, short staffing could play a part in that. Atmosphere: It can get quite loud. I was in the middle seat at the table of six so I could hear most of the conversations…those on the ends could only hear/participate with people next to or across from them.

Honestly one of the best bar service experiences ever. Our bartender was so sweet and made us some delicious experimental cocktails! Plus, the food was incredible–spring veg season done right with the grilled asparagus situation, plus a pizza so good that we ate the entire thing before phones were ever considered. Cheers!!
