Little patience is not enough, you need a lot of patience to dine here. It took me 1.5 hours to get the first dish. And reservation is needed.

Never have I ever had a culinary experience like I had here. I was recommended to come here by a local and wow was I impressed with the overall experience. The location is small and located in the heart of Anchorage making it easily accessible.

If you’re looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience, you found it in Anchorage! I’ve been to Japan many times and this compares in so many ways.

Dining here is the most precious experience for my winter Alaska trip. For sure, the space is limited and if you do not want to spend more than one hour for having dinner, this is not a choice for you. The food here is very authentic (I am Asian and a Japanese food explorer, much more affordable cuisine than most Seattle Japanese restaurants having the same-quality food) and I really love the hot sake here. I visited twice during my stay in Anchorage. The owner is super nice, highly recommended.

We had the Gyoza, Katsudon and Katsu Curry – aside from the wait, everything was made to perfection! Our reservation was for 6 pm and they opened at 5 so we waited an easy hour half (till about 7:30 pm) before our food arrived – there was a group before us. Worth the wait!

Love this place, it is amazing. Just one person doing everything so it is slow and you need to have a reservation for parties over 3. Totally worth it.

Way more authentic than you’d expect from the outside. Wow, this place is incredible. The yakitori is as good as any I’ve have in Japan, and the udon is absolutely delicious too.

All the pieces are in place for a great hidden gem but it doesn’t really come together. I came solo and sat at the bar. Chef was very busy cooking so wasn’t very conversational (very understandable, it’s basically a one man band). The waiter (chef’s wife?) was very friendly and engaged with some patrons, but that meant the rest of us were pretty neglected. Took a long time to order, and even then she didn’t quite get my drink order right, and nothing could be done (in short, there are many different sake options available, I was asked what I wanted to drink and as I started with “I’d like some sake, specifically–” I was cut off and couldn’t finish specifying and was just served large hot regular sake). Ordered the sashimi dinner (and I was told by a local to order the special sake which includes a grilled salmon seasoning, but again I was served regular sake). Food was very tasty and fresh, portion sizes were normal if not a tad bit small, but I saw other patrons have other dishes that looked larger. After finishing, it took an additional 20 mins to get the bill, because the waiter was engrossed in a) chatting with other patrons, b) singing karaoke very loudly (it’s a small room), and c) drinking sake. Once the bill came, I was charged an additional “table set fee” of $9.50. To the best of my recollection, this isn’t listed or mentioned anywhere, except these reviews. So be prepared to wait, and pay, for an overall…okay…meal.

Service and atmosphere was exactly as expected. But if one word comes to mind…overpriced. OVERPRICED!!! I should not have leave hungry after paying over $100 for nibbles for 3 people. Yes, I understand this is seafood and yes it is Alaska….but again, to pay $30 just a small strip of fish with NOTHING…no thank you. Owner is very pleasant but we had to go back home and eat again.

Absolutely happy I went to Yamaya for dinner tonight. I had the Shrimp Tempura Udon and it was by far the best udon I’ve had.
