kann Menu – Portland, OR

Type : Haitian restaurant

Location : Portland, OR

Haitian cuisine meets Pacific Northwest bounty at kann, a live-fire restaurant from James Beard Award winning chef Gregory Gourdet. The restaurant honors his heritage and culture while also honoring the seasons and local ingredients of Oregon. The name kann (cane in Haitian Creole) is a tribute to one of Chef Gregory’s favorite childhood memories in Haiti, where he’d listen for sugar cane vendors to come by with wheelbarrows overflowing with the freshly-harvested snack. Barbecue originated in Haiti and that spirit of open-fire cooking helps anchor the cuisine at kann.

Based on 416 reviews, the restaurant has received a rating of 4.7 stars. Price $$$$

We can’t wait to come back and try more dishes! My husband and I had a rare date night and had a fantastic experience at Kann. We saw Chef Gregory hard at work and he was very kind. The food is all gluten free and everything we had was out of this world, unique flavors I’ve never tasted. So happy to have this restaurant in Portland and can’t wait to go back!

This place is such a treat!! Everything we tried was delicious. Everything was gluten and dairy free. The octopus, the duck, the salad, the muffins, and the plantains we’re May favorites. The service was incredible and the vibe was great. Definitely worth snagging a reservation.

What else can be said. It’s truly an amazing adventure into the world of Haitian Food. As it won the 2023 James Beard Award I will critique each item we ate to help others.

This was one of the most wonderful dining experiences I’ve had (ever). The service was stellar. We enjoyed several of the recommendations from our server. The greens were amazing (and I don’t even like greens). The layered flavors left my tastebuds doing a happy dance. The only downside is while the restaurant is beautiful it’s quite loud which isn’t an issue for me but my husband has a hearing loss and couldn’t hear anything the server said.

This was, as a whole, the best meal of my life! We have been trying to eat Gourdet’s food for years now, ever since watching his turns on Top Chef and finally got a reservation. Let me tell you, it did NOT disappoint. Every dish was beautiful and delicious. The stone fruit salad and kampachi appetizers blew our minds. I can’t wait to go back and try more dishes!

I was happy to be able to get a reservation through a cancelation. The place has a nice vibe to it. The service was pretty on point with our server checking up on us and also providing silverware change throughout the meal. Some of the standout items for me would be the Griyo Twice Cooked Pork; Tomatoe, Stone Fruit & Berry Salad; Spice Glazed Chicken, and Glazed Duck. You can tell the food was well prepared and taste the quality of it. The Bone-in Ribeye Steak was also good, but a bit on the spendier side. The cocktails were also well made. Overall, it was a great experience with friends.

My review is a reflection of the food, service, and atmosphere. We were lucky enough to get a 6 person table in October 2022 and had the best meal of my life. Our group started with cocktails and enjoyed every single one of them. We then ordered about 14 different dishes and each was better than the last. We had such a great time sharing and commenting on the food family style. Our waitress was super helpful in helping us figure out how much to order and ended up being the perfect amount. In addition to the food being incredible, I really can’t express what it means to eat at such an incredible restaurant that is 100% gluten free. As someone with celiac, it made me tear up being able to have a normal family style eating experience with friends without having to worry about what was being ordered. It was a perfect evening. The one thing I would say is the restaurant does get very loud with the acoustics, but was fine for our friend group, just maybe not an intimate date night. But the food is worth it. Thank you Chef Gourdet for knocking this one out of the park.

kann is in an industrial area of SE Portland. I knew exactly where I was going, it was light out, & I felt perfectly safe. There was lots of foot traffic in & out of the restaurant, & the newer bar, sousòl, below it.

My fourth time eating here was my best. I had tried most of the menu and honed my experience to a few of my favorite starters plus the much-desired beef rib, and it was wise to keep the pre-main course food to a limit as the main course stands alone. Everything was perfect, from the interplay of flavors and textures in the plantain salad — a meal in itself — to the perfect balance of spice, sauce, char, smoke, fat and tenderness in the coffee rubbed beef. The staff is wonderful and the “House of Brown” rose was truly one of the best roses I’ve ever had. Extraordinary.
